Hello

I am trying to decide weather to sell the 100-400 mk2 then get the sigma sport 150-600 i use 600d and 7d the 100-400 with 1.4x will not auto focus any advice? I watch a guy on you tube who hand holds the sigma 150-600 sport . are you sure its heavy.

What would be your reasoning for changing from the Canon to the Sigma? Ability to Auto Focus with the 1.4x? I would not expect the Sigma to auto focus any better with the extender than the Canon, due to their f/stops.

Both the 600D and 7D require a lens of f/5.6 or faster for autofocus. Thus if you want to add a 1.4x extender you need to start with a lens of f/4 or faster.

The Sigma is f/5-6.3, so it would autofocus in the short end, but would not autofocus at the high end.

Looks like before the lens gets to 400mm it falls below f/5.6.

Thus there would seem to be no advantage compared to the 100-400 w/1.4X. And the Canon Mk II lens is a fantastic lens.

The 7D Mk II will autofocus with the EF 100-400 L IS II and a 1.4X TC.

Yes the Sigma 150-600 Sport is really that heavy. It weighs almost twice as much as the EF 100-400 L IS II (6.3 lbs vs 3.5 lbs). Of course you can handhold it, but, I can tell you from experience it is a pain to carry that heavy of a lens around.

I think you can add the 5D Mk III, and all of the 1D series to that list of camera bodies that would work.

Sigma lenses will AF at their long end on Canon EOS cameras despite the f/6.3 apperture.

I agree, I was trying to hint that it might be worth upgrading his camera to the 7D Mk II in this case rather than looking at a different lens. Going from a 7D to a 7D Mk II is a bigger jump in overall performance that most people realize. Another option would be the 80D which will AF with the EF 100-400 L IS II and a 1.4X TC III with 27 of it's 45 AF points not just the center one.

Yeah, I read that and have been experimenting with shooting more AF points than just the center. It doesn't work when you're trying to pick out a bird hidden in the branches, and there a lot of branches between you and the bird. Only the center AF point pulls that one off.

You guys have me looking up into the trees now.

I have been weighing the pros and cons between those two lenses. I'm not the robust fellow that I used to be. I have been leaning more and more towards the Canon.

I think he may have been referring to using the 1.4x extender with the lens.

Why do you think you need the Sport vs the Contempory? What are your intended uses? AND I agree that a 7D2 may be a more cost effective upgrade. That said a 7D2 & 150-600 C is not that far off what just the Sport might cost.

Yes I am sure it is that heavy. It is possible to hand hold it for a shot or two. But you will not do it for an hour or two. I guarantee it!

I have all three of the current 150-600mm offerings. The C, the S and the Tammy. IMHO, the choice is between the S and the Tamron. The reason it the Tamron is somewhat weather sealed the Sigma C is not. The bottom line is the Sigma S is the best of the three. It approaches what Canon makes in the super tele L series.

MPO is I don't like tele converters. So if I want a true 600mm I have to use one of these lenses. I would prefer Canon made the 100-400 Mk II a 100-600 Mk II but they didn't. The Siggy S is the closest you can come to a Canon L.

Listen to me. I am a guy that carries two 1 series all the time. Sometimes with big lenses but always with an L type lens. I can tell you the S is heavy. Even for me!

Oh, BTW, the S focuses faster than either of the other two. At least it does on a 1D Mk IV, which can focus with a f8 lens.

But even if it could only do f5.6 you can still use any of these lenses, without tele converters, as they all focus at the lens f5 aperture.

my point was the 100-400 needs an extender to reach the 600 range so its 1.4x on 100-400 vs sigma 600 on my crop 7d body.
