Lenses for the 5DsR

Okay I have a Canon 5DsR

currently using Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM

I recently expanded my budget for a new Lens (Maybe 2)

I have a solid 3K to work with can stretch it to 4K (Barely)

After all of the pros and cons upon the release of the 5Ds models it appears “L” Series is all I should be looking at, I have been described as a “General” Photographer” assuming I prefer darker photography and mainly shoot landscapes and have an affinity for full moons (although waning – no pun intended)

As I progress so will my choices of photographic subjects, I have a 40D & a 7D and will still use them, I do not shoot sports or really any moving objects.

I have reviewed the following, I am looking at trying to swing the first 2, I do utilize a tripod for most of my shots, however I have been doing more off hand, so the lack of the IS in the 24-70 concerns me a bit and although the 300mm or the 400mm is attractive I am hoping for advice from anyone that has utilized the “L” Series with the 5DS or 5DsR.

Of the Lenses I do have only the first 2 are considered marginally acceptable, I apologize for asking what some of you consider something I should be aware of already, however the more reviews I read the more I know it is better to ask.

I have indicated a current price from B & H and I would shop around, I still prefer to buy directly from Canon, just me but I know I am getting the current model, not a year old one on a shelf – modifications are always occurring.

And am I overthinking the f-Stop

Given your stated requirements and budget, buy the first two lenses on your wish list (the 24-70 and the 70-200).

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM (B & H $1,799.00)

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L II IS USM (B & H $1,999.00)

These two lenses are the best lenses made in the world. Bar none. I don't have one of the new mega MP 5 series but I have both of these lenses. I can testify to how great they are. Bottom line is, if they don't do the trick, nothing else will. Currently available.

Rid yourself of these, ....

Canon EF 70‑300mm f/4‑5.6 IS USM

Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM

Probably should get clear of this one too,...

Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM.

Get the Canon EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro USM Lens

instead. After all it's only money.

This should not be a concern buying from B&H or Adorama.

Their turn over is probably higher than Canon itself. Besides they have extremely liberal return policies.

That is a combo most people just dream about. It don't get any better than that.

The lack of IS on the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM (B & H $1,799.00) should not be a concern. I don't miss it at all. I shoot a lot of indoor stuff, too. Once upon a time no lens had IS and guess what? We got along just fine. The IQ of this lens far out shadows the lack of IS.

I'd keep the 28-135. (Actually, I'm a bit surprised at Ernie's advice; he's praised that lens in the past.) You wouldn't get much for it, and it's really not a bad outdoor walkaround lens on a FF camera. When size and weight are a consideration, you might well be glad to have it. The 24-105mm f/4L IS is better, but that's another several hundred dollars.

It's a very large lens already, and IS would make it even larger. I agree with Ernie.

Oh, yes, I do like this lens. It is a best buy for a general purpose lens. I do recommend it a lot but not on a 5Ds or 5Ds R. Actually since I don't have a 5Ds, who knows maybe it's OK. But my gut says only the highest resolution lenses will be able to take command of the 50MP caamera.

The EF 28-135 IS USM also has a rich character that is hard to quantify. It also at least at one point had the distinction of being the most used portrait lens, being the lens of choice for 'Mall Photography Studios'. I'm not sure I consider that a recommendation for the lens, but, it is an interesting factoid.

On the other hand, to play the devil's advocate, I have heard that the new mega megapixel cameras blow the old reciprocal shutter speed rule.

I have heard it said that instead of the shutter needing to be the reciprocal of the focal length, you need to go 1.5x faster. I might not shoot below 1/70th every day, but I do shoot slower than than 1/105th a lot. (70 X 1.5)

I definitely understood where Ernie was coming from; I actually have 2 of the 28-135s. They pretty much stay with the 40D & 7D, and I understood the comment about not necessarily needed the other ones in my collection, I will probably keep them for the other cameras as they will be used by others in the family, in my opinion the 40D and the 28-135 are a good combo and it also works well on the 7D.

I will be ordering my 2 choices, they will work well for my future needs and thanks everyone for your input, I value your opinions, better to ask someone that has the experience with the utilization and of course the expertise in lenses in general.

Like with any decision, now that I have the 5DsR they have of course announced an updated version with the 5D Mark IV body and an updated sensor, such is life, you jump in when you can.

I will be watching for the newer 16-35 III and of course eying up the rest…

Here again not any practical hands on experience with one but I have no doubt this is true. Just like lenses, if it isn't up to the task, a 50MP sensor is going to show it. IMHO as always.

Buying these, currently, fantastic lens is the way to go. But the next best thing for you is shooting RAW, only. RAW is not just the best way to go, it is the ONLY way to go.
