Canon 1.8 50mm mark 2 focusing issues

Hi all.

Great to join this community.

Apologies for repeating some issues that have been discussed on some threads, but I haven't found anything relevant to my problem.

Just purchased a Canon 1.8 50mm mark 2 to replace my old mark 1 for my Canon 450D.

Turning on the camera, the camera bleeps constantly when I press the shutter, but doesnt focus and doesnt shoot.

In manual mode, I turn the focus ring, but the lens doesnt focus at all.

It doesn't matter if the shutter is down half way or full, nothing works.

In manual mode, it will shoot, but it's pointless, as the image is out of focus.

Any possible reasons?

Did you get it new?

If so, call Canon. It appears the autofocus is broken. Send it back.

Yes, I bought it today.

I'll return it to the shop tomorrow.

I used an old lens today afterwards and its autofocus works fine.

As for the beeping, make sure you camera is not in shutter delay timer mode. I am not sure of exactly which lens you have.

If you are talking about the EF 50mm f/1.8 STM, then it is normal for the lens not to manual focus. All STM lenses use a “focus by wire” method of controlling focus. The focus ring is not mechanically connected to anything except a sensor.

The only way to manually focus with that lens is to “wake up” the metering by half pressing the shutter. It will only manual focus for as long as the viewfinder is lit up.

The camera is a 450D, the lens is the the STM 50mm 1.8 mark 2.

Can't seem to find a shutter delay mode setting.

Not sure this camera has one (?)

In manual mode, it wont even focus with the shutter partially down.

Nothing at all.

I think there is something mechanically wrong with it.

The other thought I had was, is the 450D not compatible with this lens?

Canon does not make a Mark II version of the EF 50mm f/1.8 STM lens that I am aware of. I think you have the older lens with a plastic mount. The STM version has an all metal mount.

BTW, I think your lens is not fully functional. The STM is a much better lens by a wide margin.

Apologies, yes I have the metal-mounted one. I returned it to the shop, tried another and it worked perfectly. Yes, mechanical problem. Yes, it looks much more durable than its predecessor. Thanks for all your help! Really appreciated!
