Has anyone else had this problem? Has anyone resolved this problem without needing to send their lens in for service?

On my EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L II IS USM lens the orientation locking knob on the tripod collar (the new version, so the non-removable one) is malfunctioning. You can still tighten and loosen the knob but when tightened all the way the collar can still rotate. Tightening the knob does indeed make it harder to turn, but can still be turned without too much effort.

It might be worth noting that (when the knob is fully loosened) turning the collar gives asymmetric resistance, i.e. it is not smooth all the way around.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated!

Hi there,

Unfortunately it sounds like this would need to be serviced to resolve. The asymmetric resistance and the fact that it never is able to fully lock down mean something inside the collar has probably slipped.

https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/support/service-repair
