Black vertical line keeps appearing on back of prints for PIXMA MX922

Hi everyone,

Whenever my PIXMA MX922 prints something, the print has a black line on the back (pictures attached). Sometimes it even has black ink splotches on the bottom edge of the paper but that's been happening less recently. It's probably a result of ink spilling in the printer, since this problem started right after.

I had changed the black ink cartridge and the first new one I opened was leaking. I didn't notice until after I had put it in and it spilled ink everywhere. I wiped up all of the ink that I could see. There's definitely a possibility ink got into places I can't see but I really don't want to have to take apart the printer.

Things I've tried:

Cleaning the rollers
Attempted to clean the machine via the setting, printer said it wasn't unnecessary
Printing many blank pages to hopefully wipe up the remaining ink. It looked like it worked for a little but then the line came back.

Does anyone have any ideas or do I definitely need to take it apart to look for the rest of the spill?

Some troubleshooting hints point to the print head needing cleaning, but I don't that that is the case with your printer, if the printed side of the paper looks like it should. It looks more like a dirty roller to me. Here is the procedure to clean the MX900 series rollers. There is a maintenance program to do that, its precise so follow the directions carefully:

I ran the maintenance program for both the upper and lower cassettes. I tried printing and now I get a line on both sides of the paper. Do I run the maintenance program for both cassettes repeatedly under the assumption there's just more ink dirtying the rollers and if I run it enough times, it'll eventually be clean, or do you think it might be something else?

Hello, sorry for the late reply and thank you for helping me with this issue. I ran a Cleaning for the printer head according to the maintenance menu. When I did a test print after, the front had two ink lines: one vertical and one horizontal, with the horizontal line near the top edge (picture attached). I also cleaned the bottom plate and the scrap paper came out with an ink streak. I then left it alone for a little and did another test print. This time the paper only came out with an ink streak on the back of the page. Should I try a deep clean? I'm not sure that the problem has anything to do with the printer head...

I think you are correct, this is not a printer head issue. Some very straight parts of the paper feed still have ink on them. I suggest you purchase some cleaner sheets and run them through the printer they should pick up the remaining ink. They are available on Amazon for a low price.

I tried the cleaner sheets. I used them multiple times and the issue still hasn’t resolved 😓. It would look like it had but then the lines would come back full force. I even swapped out the new black ink cartridge for an empty one to see if that was the problem but it made no difference. Are we at the point that the printer might need service?

Hi jove44,

Please try a bottom plate cleaning:

MX920 series > Cleaning the Machine > Cleaning the Inside of the Machine (Bottom Plate Cleaning)

And you can also try cleaning the inside as well:

MX920 series > Cleaning the Machine > Cleaning the Protrusions inside the Machine

The bottom plate cleaning function is a good thing to try next. You may need to run it a couple of times.
