Mac osX 24.2 lost recognition of scanner in TS9521Ca

Computer is an iMac 2023 now running osX (MacOS) Tahoe 26.4. Canon device is PIXMA TS9521Ca, new in 2024.

Problem is, MacOS no longer recognizes the scanning functions of the device. The "Open Scanner..." button that used to appear in the Settings > Printer & Scanners > TS9500 Series is GONE. Also, Canon's IJ Scan Utility Lite can no longer find any scanner on the network. Third, Apple's Image Capture program just indicates zero devices available.

So, I've done this several times to no avail:

Removed the device using MacOS Settings > Printer & Scanners > TS95000 Series > "Remove Printer...".

Followed https://ij.manual.canon/ij/webmanual/WebGS/WGS/wgs_start.html?lng=en&type=setup&area=us&mdl=TS9521Ca&os=m to re-install the drivers and utilities.

After doing those steps, the TS9500 Series device STILL appears as ONLY a printer in MacOS Settings > Printer & Scanners > TS95000 Series. And the IJ Scan Utility Lite and Image Capture programs STILL don't find any scanners available.

I have even performed a Full Reset from the TS9521Ca's screen menu, but this station didn't improve after.

Please suggest what I might be missing here. By removing the device as described above, would that leave any driver elements from Canon behind in MacOS that detours away from a full "brand-new" install?

PS: Full Disclosure! A week ago, I temporarily connected a new Canon TS3722 printer/scanner to this MacOS, and followed Canon's directions for its installation. Everything worked great, theTS3722 printed and scanned well from MacOS. I disconnected the TS3722 and gave it to a relative, and I removed the TS3700 Series device using MacOS Settings > Printer & Scanners > TS3700 Series > "Remove Printer...". The TS3700 Series device no longer appears in MacOS, as expected. BUT, it seems that after this exercise, MacOS lost its ability to recognize my own TS9521Ca as a scanner as well as a printer. Are there possibly some TS3700 driver elements left behind in MacOS that are blocking its recognition of the TS9500 scanning capabilities?

Steps to Remove All Traces of a Printer from macOS Tahoe 26.4

Remove the Printer from System Preferences

Open System Preferences.
Select Printers & Scanners.
Find the printer you want to remove in the list.
Click the minus (-) button below the printer list.
Confirm the removal if prompted.

Manually Delete Remaining Printer Files

After removing the printer from the list, you may need to delete additional files to ensure all traces are gone. Follow these steps:

Open Finder.
Navigate to the Library folder on your Mac.
Look for and delete the following files related to the printer:

/Library/Printers/hp/Utilities/quick-connect-software-agent

Final Steps

Empty the Trash to permanently delete the files.
Restart your computer to ensure all changes take effect.

Install Canon TS9521C on macOS 14.4 (Tahoe)

1) Download Canon driver & software

Go to Canon's support site and download the "IJ Printer Driver" and the "Wireless Connection Setup" utility for macOS 14 (or the latest macOS) for model TS9521C.

2) Install the software

Open the downloaded .dmg or .pkg and run the installer(s). Follow prompts and allow any system permissions requested (System Settings → Privacy & Security).
Restart if the installer asks.

3) Connect the printer

USB: plug the USB cable and turn the printer on.
Wi‑Fi (recommended):
- Use the printer control panel: Settings → Device settings → LAN settings → Wireless LAN setup and follow steps to join your Wi‑Fi.
- Or run Canon’s Wireless Connection Setup utility on your Mac to configure network settings.

4) Add printer in System Settings

Open System Settings → Printers & Scanners.
Click the plus (+) button.
Select your TS9521C from the list. If it doesn't appear, choose "IP" and enter the printer's IP (find in printer network settings).
For "Use/Print Using" pick the Canon driver (not AirPrint) to enable full features.

5) Test and enable features

Print a test page.
For scanning, open Canon IJ Scan or use Apple's Image Capture / Preview to detect the scanner.

Troubleshooting (brief)

If only AirPrint appears, install/reinstall Canon driver and re-add the printer.
Reset printing system: System Settings → Printers & Scanners → Control‑click in list → Reset printing system… then re-add.
Ensure macOS Security allowed the Canon installer in Privacy & Security.

Hi Derrick,

Before I spend time on this, may I ask ...

Why are the directions for manual removals referring to "HP" printer files? Shouldn't I be deleting "Canon" files? The printer I will be removing from System Settings is a Canon TS9521Ca, and there may be elements of the other Canon TS3722 as well?

Also, your install section refers to macOS 14.4 as "Tahoe", but Tahoe is level 26. Should I assume that's just a typo?

They should be, the files are "examples" I stand corrected with the Tahoe version number. But I don't think it will matter. And that creates a different scenario. Your printer will require the Air Print Driver which provides printer capability only. I suspect you have that installed already. The traditional printer driver is not available for your MAC OS version, and this program should recognize the scanner. IJ SCANNER LITE utility. This link will download it directly to your MAC.

Required Driver

The AirPrint driver is the only option available for the Canon TS9521C on macOS. The traditional print driver is not supported for this model.

Installation Steps

Hi Derrick, I'm struggling re your latest response (4/7/26 9:22pm).

You wrote ... the files [that I need to delete] are "examples" but you didn't clarify whatever that meant to you. I took that to mean I should change into /Library/Printers/Canon/ (instead of HP) and delete accordingly. But, /Library/Printers/Canon/ has no files that match the 7 you listed above on 4/6/26 7:55pm. I removed all that HP stuff in the list anyway (4 HP files did exist and I deleted, the 3 other HP files never existed), then I cleared the Trash, and restarted MacOS.

I loaded the IJ Scanner Lite utility from the link you supplied. It's at v4.2.1, for the record.

I followed all steps for installing the TS9521Ca device from your 2 responses above (both 4/6 and 4/7). That resulted in what I've been stuck with all along ... a printer (it prints fine from MacOS) BUT NO SCANNER! Once again, the IJ Scan Lite utility cannot find any scanner in MacOS.

I confirmed, the driver for my re-installed TS9521Ca **IS** the AirPrint driver ("Canon TS9500 series-AirPrint" at v4.0 per System Settings > Printers & Scanners).

So, I've gone in a circle and back where I started. I have an operational TS9521Ca PRINTER, but nothing above has resulted in me re-gaining its SCANNER functions. PLEASE ADVISE FURTHER, thank you.

The air print driver has no scanner function, and Canon has no current drivers for your Operating system version. I had hoped that the link to the IJ scanner utility would work since it is posted on Canon's support page for your version of Tahoe as seen here:

I believe your version of Tahoe has native HP printer support which explains the HP in the files you deleted.

Sometimes the Sequoia version works. It does for my TR8620a which has no Tahoe download.

Thanks Derrick and John. Temporarily hooking up that TS3722 to my Mac -- my assumption is, that driver (which included scanning) somehow disabled my permanent TS9521Ca from further scanning under Tahoe 26.4, as it had done prior. I guess I am stuck with the status quo, but I'm not happy about it.

Derrick, I have to assume(!!) that Canon WILL SOMEDAY roll out a full-function driver for the TS9500 Series under MacOS Tahoe 26.4. (I mean, why would Canon NOT eventually keep up with Apple's releases?)

Does Canon maintain an "interested parties" notification list, so that I can become alerted when Canon has released a full-function TS9500 Series driver for Tahoe 26.4? I would like to be alerted so that I can download and install it as soon as it's available. How can this notification happen please?

Canon support should provide that info as a notification, but I don't know if they do. However, it should show up on your printer's support page right away if and when they update the drivers for MAC OS versions and Windows versions.
