I have a Pixma 6820 that does just fine with paper and cardstock. I just bought Avery full-page mailing labels; P/N 18163. When I try to print on them, the printer loads the page, scans the head left then right, then feeds the page all the way through and starts flashing orange.

I've had this issue previously with other labels so I trimmed the backing paper from the edges so that the full width of the page is label material. No improvement.

I changed the print settings to photo paper and borderless printing. No improvement.

I trimmed the blue border off the top of the sheet. No improvement.

I can't really afford to buy a separate printer that can handle printing on labels. Is there anything else I can try? Is there some reason the printer isn't able to print on label sheets specifically? I've never had this problem with any other paper, and I've never had this problem with any other printer.

Troubleshooting Canon PIXMA IX6820 for Avery Labels

Printer Settings Adjustments

To successfully print Avery labels with your Canon PIXMA IX6820, follow these recommended settings:

Paper Size: Set to 8.5" x 11" for most Avery products.

Scale: Ensure the scale is set to 100% or "Actual Size" in the print dialog.

Media Type: Change to "Labels," "Heavyweight," or "Cardstock" to help the printer handle the label sheets properly.

Feeding Labels

Properly feeding the labels can prevent issues:

Manual Feed Tray: If available, use the manual feed tray for a straight paper path, which helps with accurate printing.

Fan the Sheets: Before placing them in the tray, fan the sheets to prevent sticking.

Capacity: Do not overfill the tray; keep it at half or three-quarters full.

Print Quality Settings

Adjust the print quality to avoid smearing and misalignment:

Glossy Labels: Select "Normal" print quality and use plain paper settings.

Other Labels: Choose "Best" print quality for optimal results.

Common Issues and Solutions

If you encounter problems while printing:

Multiple Sheets: If the printer pulls more than one sheet, try feeding one sheet at a time.

Misalignment: Check that the print settings are correct and that the labels are properly aligned in the tray.

By following these steps, you should be able to print Avery labels successfully with your Canon PIXMA IX6820.

Thank you, but unfortunately none of that boilerplate stuff works. It’s not failing to grab the paper, it’s that it won’t attempt to print on the paper. It brings it in and then just sends it right along. This is something baked into the design of the printer itself and it seems like canon ought to know what it is and how to bypass it.

I think you are correct, you are not the only 6820 owner having this same issue. Someone trimmed the edges of the backing paper of other labels to make the printing area full page and that worked but not for Avery labels, don't know if it worth a try with yours or not. Is it possible that there is anything here to help? This guide is for printing the label project saved as a pdf.

I think it's unfortunately more of the same thing, which mostly pertains to problems getting the printer to load the paper or print correctly on the paper. But that's not the actual problem, it's that the printer is loading the paper and then choosing not to print on it, for reasons unknown. Canon must know the reason, perhaps someone will chime in here.

Also the Avery easy print labels seem to work best, and make sure the wide body printer guides are snug against the paper, or it may feed through.

Hi, jwarrend! Before we go any further, we need to confirm which printer model you have. Our PIXMA lineup has two different printers with the number 6820 in their name, specifically the single-function PIXMA iX6820 and the multifunction PIXMA MG6820. Please let us know which one you're using so we can make sure you're getting the right advice.

Your printer won't accept the label sheet because it thinks the paper didn't load correctly.

Give this a shot:

Use one sheet at a time.

Choose "Heavy paper" or "Matte photo" for the type of paper.

Check to see that the sheet is flat and not curled.

If it keeps happening, it's likely that your printer just doesn't work well with full-page sticky labels. This is a common problem.
