PIXMA G7020 Error 5B00... refuses to reset

So today we hit the infamous error 5B00 due to full ink absorbers. Long sotry short, we managed to find the ink absorbers, pull them out, clean them and put them back in their place.

The problem is that the printer absoluetely refuses to go into service mode. When we turn it on, it boots into the menu for all of half a second (enough to press any button ONCE before the error code shows its face and renders all buttons useless. The only thing that works is the power button.

Holding the Stop button never produces the alarm sequence, even after holding it for 5 minutes.

When the printer is off, holding the stop button and power button then letting go of the stop button and then pressing the stop button 5 times then letting go of the power button only turns the printer on regularly... which produces the error issue. We can enver get into service mode or hard reset the **bleep** thing.

Is there some other way we can force a hard reset?

Hi,

Even if the ink absorber is successfully changed or cleaned, the ink absorber counter must be reset and the reset utility that is necessary to reset this counter is not available to the general public and normally found only at printer service facilities.

If the printer is in it's 1 year warranty, I recommend reaching out to Canon support for your warranty options. You will need to register your Canon gear HERE to access additional support options.

If the printer is out of warranty, you would qualify for the Canon Upgrade program. This is for out of warranty units which have been diagnosed to require service or are incompatible with a new or upgraded system. This program allows you the opportunity to purchase a replacement product discounted from the list price. Free ground shipping is included with your purchase.

If you would like to take advantage of this offer, please call our Sales Department at (866) 443-8002 Mon-Sat, 9 AM to 9pm EST excluding holidays.

Did this answer your question? Please click the Accept as Solution button so that others may find the answer as well.

Hayli, could you also comment on how difficult it was to get access to the absorber pads, and from where did you get the replacement pads? On Amazon for example I find absorber pads advertised for some of the other Canon G-series printers, but never the G7020 (or G6020). And all the videos out there on how to disassemble to access the absorber pads on the G-series never seem to apply to the G7020 or G6020, which are apparently are a bit different.

A printer service center rep told me that even if you replace the pad, the printer has no way of knowing it has been changed, so it would not clear the error. Canon might of changed software app protocols to result in the inability to reset the printer settings.

googling appears to be fruitless, and Canon Support does not offer repair service. You cannot even talk to anyone about the issue. It seems they do not care about the customer.

I, unfortunately, didn't have any success with this tip. It made my display screen turn black. The printer made the sounds like it was going to print, but it never would lead to that. I also tried holding the STOP button down for different periods of time prior to push it 5 times. Thanks for trying!
