topic Mac osX 15.5 lost recognition of scanner in TS9521Ca in Desktop Inkjet Printers

Computer is an iMac 2023 now running osX (MacOS) Sequoia 15.5. Canon device is PIXMA TS9521Ca, new in 12/24 and still under warranty. New Wifi connection setup in 12/24 was easy; I could drive all device functions perfectly for months thereafter.

But lately (05/25) the iMac has mysteriously lost, and can no longer recognize/operate the SCANNER side of the TS9521Ca. Opening the device by selecting Settings > Printer & Scanners > TS9500 Series, the "Open Scanner..." button is GONE. The PRINTER side is still recognized and seems to produce prints just fine from the iMac.

I opened a Canon Support chat on 05/21/25. Technician "George" worked diligently with me for ~90 minutes to try and get to the root cause and to correct this issue. I reset the iMac's print subsystem and reinstalled the TS9500 device driver via Settings > Printers & Scanners > TS9500 Series Unfortunately, no resolution was produced.

I should also note,

A) When running Canon's IJ Scan Utility Lite app on iMac, it cannot find any scanners installed on the iMac.

B) I also have a MacBook Air also running osX (MacOS) 15.5. It never lost recognition of the SCANNER side of the TS9521Ca, and it still can successfully drive the SCANNER as in the past.

C) The Canon PRINT app on my iPhone 13 (with latest updates installed) also recognizes the SCANNER side of the TS9521Ca, and it can successfully drive the SCANNER.

Can anyone offer any ideas on how to drill down to find root cause and to resolve this? Thanks in advance.

Hi kimg1954,

As a test, please try scanning using the Mac's application Image Capture.

For information regarding using Image Capture, please use this link:

Are you able to scan using Image Capture?

Hello Patrick,

Thank you for taking on my problem. The answer is YES ...

Apple's Image Capture DOES indeed find and control the Canon PIXMA TS9521Ca scanner.

However, Settings > Printers & Scanners > Canon TS9500 Series results in a device window with no "Open Scanner ..." button, which used to appear prior to my osX 15.5 upgrade.

This is for Patrick @ Canon support >>>

I heard today from fellow poster "alb3" in this forum that his scanner problem under MacOS 15.5 is suddenly gone.

I just ran the Canon IJ Lite app here, and it now works for me too! Finds the scanner, gives me a menu screen of different ways to scan, etc. Before, it would just search indefinitely for a scanner and never find one.

I also removed my "printer only" Canon device in MacOS Settings > Printers & Scanners, then I re-added it from the same window. The new device definition now INCLUDES the heretofore missing "Open Scanner..." button, which is what I used to see until opening my report in this forum. And it does operate the scanner properly.

In the past day or two I believe Canon must have silently corrected their device software for Mac OS 15.5 compatibility, and propagated it around via auto-update.

Just wanted your team to know that I no longer need further investigation at this time, and thank you for listening.

--Kim
