I don't need color printing. Can I use two black 245 cartridges in

the unit instead of a 245 and a 246?

The printer is looking for a three-color cartridge with three nozzles. Putting a single-nozzle black in its space won't work. If it fits at all.

As @normadel mentioned, it is not possible to switch, mix or match ink cartridges.
