PIXMA G6020: computer won't detect that the power is on my printer

my printer is GE 6020 and I am using the latest Windows software. For some unexplained reason my computer will not detect the power is on when I try to print. It says the printer is turned off and I need to turn it on. The Wi-Fi is set up on the printer and it is connected to my network but I just can't get my computer to realize that the printer is powered on and not off like it says.
