Has anyone tried purchasing a broken (for parts) Canon printer and swapped the broken hinges for working ones?
Also, it seems like the MG8120 printer uses identical hinges as the MG8220 as well as MG5350 and MG6120 models - can anyone confirm if this is indeed the case?

The right hinge on the top of my printer broke. When I called Canon Parts, they gave me the following part numbers, QC34701-000 for the Right Hinge and MC34702-000 and said they are no longer available the last ones being sold in 2017. Does any one know of any place to get new or used hinges for my printer? Thank you, Ed.

Greetings,

The Canon Parts Department would be your best bet for cross-referencing parts. The MG 8120 is 14 yrs old. Getting parts for it would be extremely challenging.

I tried to glue my broken pieces together using E6000 glue, but that didn't work.

I decided to try building a replacement - using HDPE panels. 2 x 3/16" for the sides to hold the hinge screws, and 1 x 3/4" thick piece for the center. I cut them using a hacksaw and coping saw, then filed them to the shape I needed. Screwed it all together, and it works!

quick update from the above-mentioned MG8120 hinge replacement idea/question:

MG5320 (EU model no. is MG5350) uses different and slightly smaller hinges, making them incompatible

MG6120 (EU model no. is MG6150) uses same hinges, EXCEPT the spring inside the hinges are slightly shorter (about 1 or 2 mm), meaning it will not hold the slightly heavier MG8120/MG8220 lid. I managed to move the original springs from the broken hinges into the salvaged hinges and then put everything back together - giving my MG8180 (Chinese model!!!) another lease on life!
