Found the solution for me on a Windows 8.1 support thread:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-hardware/windows-81-printer-bidirectional-support/2dce9105-981b-40b1-a6cc-26fd18c4b594?auth=1

Simple explanation is to completely uninstall and delete instances of the Canon printer, then reinstall via the latest driver available on the Canon website.

Printer: MP800

OS: Windows 10 x64

Error: "Cannot communicate with the printer. Turn Enable bi-directional support on in the printer's Properties dialog box"

Have ticked checkbox in printer settings to enable this but it keeps getting reset.

Downloaded latest drivers (Windows 7 x64), deleted printer and reinstalled - same error.

What else can I try?

Thanks.

Same error, but printer is iP4300. Windows 10 installed a default driver that didn't add the model name in the printer name, and the printer was offline with the error mentioned above. I uninstalled and ran the driver install executable for Windows 7 from the Canon support site, which installed the driver for Windows 7 and properly installed the printer, but it is still offline with the same error.
