topic Releasing parked cartridges from dead printer in Desktop Inkjet Printers

I have a Canon MP520 printer that is no longer functional (does not power up). Is there a way to release the printer cartridges from the parked position to the right. Manufacturers seem to go to great lenghts to make it seem impossible to disassemble or repair printers. Even though you paid for the ink cartridges they may become locked away from you so that they no longer seem to belong to you. Is there a right way to do this? It's going to the landfills. Has anyone succeeded in getting out a locked cartridge assembly while the power is no longer available to the printer? Has aonyone succeeded in taking apart a Canon MP printer, preferably one of the models more than 5 year old.
