topic MP530 stopped doing "black only" copying. in Desktop Inkjet Printers

I replaced both black ink cartridges, which were low. That did not help. I then cleaned the print heads and did an automatic print head alignment. I got an error message indicating the automatic alignment did not work properly. When I tried manual print head alignment, the pattern that printed was totally missing columns "A" and "L" as well as the column and row labels. I tried making manual adjustments for the columns that did print, and I changed "A" to -3 and "L" to +1 (just guesses), but that did not help. The color printing is working fine. Any ideas as to what I can try next to fix this would be greatly appreciated.
