mx870 - back feed stopped working for photo paper & can't feed from cassette

My printer was working fine using back feed for a borderless image to be printed on matte photo paper. It stopped feeding - error message is that there is no paper.

so, I want to feed from cassette. I spsecified plain paper to get it to feed from cassette. When I select borderless it auto sets it to back feed - which is not working.

How can I get the back feed to work
