Hello Lanceh.

There are a few things that may prevent the computer and the scanner from communicating. Usually, it is that the scan mode is not enabled on the printer.

On the imageCLASS MF4770n, you will need to select the scan mode on the printer first. Please follow these steps and then scan a document.

Press the [SCAN] button on the printer and select [Remote Scanner] and press [OK].

On the computer, go to [Applications] > [Canon MF Utilities] > [Canon MF Toolbox].

Once the Toolbox program opens, select [PDF].

Once the [PDF] window is open, verify the settings are as you would like them and then click [Start].

Thanks for the reply. I folowed your instructions. When I open Cannon MF Toolbox, an error window states

There are no windows open when the MF Toolbox is runnining, just the menus which are: MF Toolbox, Edit, Scanner, Window. Under the Scanner menu is "Cannon MF 4700 Series USB". When that is selected the above error window occures.

Here is the System Report

When installing the printer, I could not get the firmware to update from the Cannon webpage. I got the drivers from the webpage but the firmware did not work.

Hi LanceH.

Unfortunately, the images did not display. Do you have any type of USB hub or switch connected between the printer and the computer? If so, please remove it and connect the printer and the computer directly. I also recommend uninstalling and reinstalling the ScanGear driver. Remove the USB cable and follow the steps below:

Click [GO] at the top of your screen and select [Applications > Canon MF Utilities] and delete the [Canon MF Toolbox].

Click [GO] and select [Macintosh HD > Library > Application Support > Canon] and delete [ScanGear MF, WMCLibrary.framework, and WMCReg.plist]

***The next two steps deletes information for all scanners. You will have to reinstall any other scanners you have connected.***

Click [GO] and select [Macintosh HD > Library > Image Capture > Devices] and delete [Canon MFScanner.app].

Click [GO] and select [Macintosh HD > Library > Image Capture > TWAIN Data Sources] and delete [Canon MF4700.ds and Canon MF4700 USB.ds]

Restart the computer.

Empty the Trash Bin.

Reinstall the ScanGear driver and try to scan again.

If this does not resolve the issue, we recommend that you contact us so that we can further assist you.

Most stupid instruction I have ever seen on scanning. You have to go back and forth.

Any chance Canon let you do the scanning from a computer?

And on top of that, any downloaded software from Canon support website won't work. You have to install one from the CD came with the machine.

Patrice (Canon Expert),
I tried your recommended steps and reinstalled latest Canon Mac ScanGear software (v2.3.0) from the Canon website.

My Macbook Air still does not communicate with the printer that is directly attached via USB, even though MF Toolbox correctly auto detected that it is connected to Canon MF4700 Series USB scanner.

The MF Toolbox error message says "Cannot communicate with any of the scanners. The scanner may not be connected or may be turned off."

I had similar issues - what i did was install Scan Gear - once doing that - I went to the printer itself and clicked "Scan->Pc1" and followed the prompts - once it found my computer - I opened scan gear and then hit scan - and then it worked. Unfortunately I don't think the computer can talk with the printer when you want to scan - and will have to manually hit the but scan on the computer (or scan->Pc1) for it to work. After a few times - now when I just hit the scan button it recognizes that it is the computer I am connected to.

Hope this helps
