If you're trying to print from your computer you have to manually put in bottom tray to print normal letters. Once you hit print, go into media/ Quality, and there should be a button to hit bottom tray.

My MX920 is doing the same thing...attempting to print normal letter size page from the upper tray (photo paper, etc)! Keeps saying upper tray is empty. Tried re-seating lower tray, checking for jams, paper in lower tray is full (but not overly full). Rebooted printer...all with the same result. Unable to print because it is trying to print from the upper tray.

I have been very successful in having this print normally from lower tray...but every now and then, it gets a bug to want to print from the upper tray (which has never been used).

Is there a way to manually force the printer to default to lower tray? If not...WHY NOT???? This is causing my confidence and patience in Canon printers to erode! Please help!!!

Using wireless thru Mac OS.

THANKS!

Hi Loungeact,

The printer will automatically select which tray to print from based on the paper size and media type selected directly on the printer (when copying) or in the printer driver (when printing from your computer). When attempting to print from the lower cassette tray, you will want to ensure that the paper size and media type selected are one of the following:

-- Photo paper (A4, 8" x 10" (20 x 25 cm), or Letter size)

-- Plain paper (A4, B5, A5, Letter, or Legal size)

-- Envelopes

When trying to print from the upper cassette tray of the unit, the paper size and media type selected will need to be one of the following:

-- Photo paper (4" x 6" (10 x 15 cm) or 5" x 7" (13 x 18 cm) size)

Hope this helps!

This didn't answer your question or issue?

This isn't really an answer to the question, is it?

I'm running Yosemite 10.10.2 on a powerbook. I'm printing a document from a web page viewed through chrome (Version 41.0.2272.101 (64-bit).

Yesterday, I printed just fine. Today, I cannot get the paper to revert to the lower tray. The printer is set for 8.5x11, I'm trying to print 8.5x11. I have restarted the printer and I have removed the printer and added it back to the my settings on the powerbook.

The question is, is there something with the trays that needs to be reset to get it to print properly? The lower tray has paper; we have never used the upper tray.

So, no, your printer isn't automatically selecting the tray based on paper size and media.

To answer your question. No, there is no setting with the trays that needs to be reset.

However, I've found that sometimes when printing from Chrome the paper size setting will change in the browser. This causes the "auto paper select" function of the printer to fail. Basilly the application is telling printer to print in a paper size other than 8.5x11.

Make sure that you change the paper type to "Letter or 8.5x11" within the computer application that you're printing from.

Hope this helps.

I got my daughter a MX920 last month and she got the same problem printing from her ipad. At first the problem seems inconsistent - she can print something some times and ran into "out of paper (upper)..." error some other time. What I have noticed is that the errors seem to happen whenever she prints from certain app such as camera roll, or printing certain image file. Reading the response from Canon support, it does sound like the app would dictate what paper to use when print. And I suppose it makes sense for the picture/camera app to tell the printer to use picture paper (from upper tray) to print an image file.

To work around the problem, I've asked her, instead of printing the picture directly from the camera roll, copy the image and paste it into some notepad app (notability is what she has) and print from there. Meanwhile, I have the print setting sets to Letter as the paper size. And it prints without a problem.

Hope it helps.

So, basically what Canon is saying, is "You can only print CERTAIN sized documents from the lower tray. Even though the tray is fully adjustable to accomodate most any custom size, if you try to select and enter a custom size, we're going to force the printer to print from the upper tray. For no real reason. And just to make it even MORE frustrating, the upper tray only allows about half the adjustment potential of the lower tray."

Had this issue with a client's printer. I found that mpligon's response to this problem was the most effective.

Working with an Apple MacBook Pro, unknown OS X.

1. I went to Finder, then System Preferences.

2. Under System Preferences, select Printer & Scanner.

3. Remove the problematic printer.

4. Restart the device.

5. After the reboot, go back into Printer and Scanner and add the Printer back.

Note: I did find that when I intially went into the Printer and Scanner page, that the printer with the problem was showing Idle and a yellow caution dot was by the Idle. After the reboot and adding the printer, it was a green dot and Idle.

Thanks mpligon!
