Pixma TR8520 won’t print draft with Mojave - Apple and Canon can’t help

I recently purchased the TR8520 but am unable to print in draft mode from my Mac (OS 10.14, Mojave). The three printing choices appear - draft, normal, and best - but when I drag the arrow to “draft” and release it, it jumps back to “normal”. I’ve spoken to customer support at Canon and Apple, who pointed fingers at each other. Finally the Apple rep suggested I ask the community. Can anyone help? Thanks!

Hi DelawareMacUser,

Draft mode is not available in all applications on your Mac. The application dictates whether or not you are able to select draft mode for use when printing.

Draft mode not available in Microsoft Word? That's nonsense. I don't think I want to own a printer that can't do that - and I just got this one.

I'm very sorry, but I cannot find a single application on my Mac that will allow me to select "Draft" using the page setup slider that offers Draft, Normal, or Best. I've tried Microsoft apps. Apple apps, Chrome, and Acrobat Reader. Something other than which application I'm using is preventing me from selecting Draft. The Windows PC that I also have has no such issues with allowing draft print.

Please try to find us a better answer. Thanks.

I guess this is the final update.

I spoke to another person in tech support who spent a lot of time with me trying to find a workaround - to no avail. I then spoke to a supervisor, who checked and told me that NONE of their printers will print in draft mode with Mojave. Canon’s fault? Apple’s fault? As I pointed out to the supervisor, people are not going to get rid of their devices, but they might decide not to buy a Canon printer.

I have this problem with my Pixma TS8220. I have called both Canon and Apple. Apple spent over a half hour trying to figure out the issue. I even sent up my printer via it's IP address., meaning avoiding AirPrint, which is what Canon said was the problem. No Draft printing. What Apple tech did was find Canon's detailed list of what my printer does and Draft was not on the list. I asked Canon why they didn't list that Draft was not a feature. Could it be to sell more ink? Anyway, I have one thing left to try and this is if you bought your printer before 10/12/18. There is a large firmware update online for my printer. Maybe that will work. If not. My brand new printer is useless to me without Draft mode unless I win the lottery and don't care about money. Apple did give me a few names of some inexpensive printers that print in Draft move Mojave.

ABSOLUTELY RIGHT !! i regret purchasing a canon printer, i have been using HP for the past 6 years never had a problem like this, ink cost is high too comparatively, once ink of my cartridges is empty i will throw this printer away because cost of the 5 cartridges is 95% cost of the printer. will buy hp instead

NOW I"m F@#$in gonna let somebody to refill ink tanks, not but cartridges anymore, rather buy a printer that supports photo print and the most basic feature DRAFT MODE.

If other printers work with a Mac then it can't be entirely Apple's fault. But what really angers me the most is Canon advertises that this printer is compatible with the Mac. That's faulty advertising.

I had the same issue, it's simple to solve.

We need to download the drivers from canon website and use them instead of the automatically assigned airprint driver.

Copy&past from apple.stackexchange comment that helped me.

On the latest versions of OSX (e.g. tested with High Sierra, 10.13.2) there is a seemingly handy option to add "nearby printer" which lists printers the OS can auto-locate. The problem is that this option defaults to using airprint and never gives the option to change the print driver with the "use" drop down.

To fix this (see also this Epson-focussed exchange on Apple community), reinstall the printer using the printer-specific driver:

Open Printers & Scanners in System Preferences.
Select the Printer with the troublesome airprint driver
Press the minus sign, "-," at the bottom to remove the current printer
Press the plus sign, "+," to add a new printer
Don't select from the nearby list, but rather select "Other"
The printer should still appear on the list in the resulting dialog. Selected it, but before pressing add, access the "Use" drop down to select the corresponding printer driver. If your printer type is not listed below AirPrint, see if it is listed under "Select Software..." If it is still not there, you might need to download an updated driver from your printer manufacturers website.
Once you have the corresponding driver selected in "Use" press the "Add" button.

This should now use the manufacturer customized printer dialog including the option to select "Fast" for "Print Quality" under the "Quality and Media" option set.

I tried these nice, clear instructions. They don't solve the problem because Canon's website tells me that there are no drivers for the PIXMA TR8520 printer. I tried reinstalling the Canon printer software, but that made no difference.

You are correct. Technically none of the Canon printers support draft mode beause Canon failed to create drivers. I now have a VERY expensive inkjet due to the amount of ink used to print. What a waste. The consumer loses again. Will never buy any Canon prodcut again.

I have to say that I am incredibly disappointed that Canon has not found a fix for no draft mode for Mac. Ink will get very expensive. I just purchased this printer and am stuck with it but I will be sure to avoid Canon printers in the future.

Has there been any updates to this issue? My kids are now home due to coronavirus and I have to print PAGES upon PAGES for them. Is Canon turning their backs on families with kids and price gouging them for inks? We need draft mode ASAP!

I sold my Pixma as as fast as I could to a PC person. It looks like Canon is never to create drivers for the Mac. I am very happy with my new printer--an Epson printer, which includes drivers. Ink will always be expensive, but the Epson has 4 Print Settings. For PDFs, it's called Draft, for other documents, it's called Fast Economy. I will never buy a Canon product again.

Thanks for this. It worked like a charm when I tried it for my MG6350. I now have draft mode! It was the "networking" driver rather than the Bonjour driver which made the difference. I downloaded a driver from the canon website and presume that's the "networking" driver which I've now managed to select thanks to your help.

I'm glad this worked for you. It is possible to download drivers (from Canon) for the MG6350. There are NO drivers available for the TR8500 series, which is what I have.
