Pixma 2500 won't align printhead

After starting the alignment process, the sheet prints out with no problem. But when I place it on the platen and press the start button as instructed, I get this error message:

I have tried this everal times with different cartridges since acquiring the printer months ago, always with the same result. I think it's time to try and sort it out if anyone can help.

I'm afraid the suggestion that I make a transatlantic phone call is not very helpful.

Printer issues I've raised before have been rapidly resolved on this site, and I was - still am - hoping to get a similar response to this one. Help, please...
