Pixma TS9120 Ink Cartridges

Two qustions:

1) Why are two black ink cartridges necessary for this printer: PBBK and BK?

2) Do you need the PB (Photo Blue) cartridge if you don't print photos? Why do the multi cartridge pakages available include all the cartridges except PB which needs ot be purchased separatey?

The printer uses 2 different types of inks:

Dye based

Pigment based

From Google:

Each type has its advantages and disadvantages. Because pigment is composed of larger particles, large blocks of color may look better while with dye ink, tiny imperfections and spots may be visible. The flip side of this is that very fine detail may render better with dye than with pigment.

Your second question is a good one, and also easy to answer.

Printer manufacturers have agreed on a standard for measuring page yield. In order to meet these standards some of the tanks have to have a have minimum capacity in order to meet the stated page yield which is affected by the percentage of coverage.

To answer the parts of your second question that were not already answered by the previous poster,

All ink tanks need to be installed and in good working order for the TS9120 to print. If an ink tank was left empty or missing, it leaves the ink feed system at greater risk of drying up. Additionally, the Canon genuine ink acts to help keep the ink feed system clear of obstructions and residue.

The reason that the multi-pack ink packs do not include Photo Blue is because the Photo Blue is far less likely to empty compared to the inks included in the packs. Rather than increasing waste and expense, the Photo Blue is provided separately, for purchase as needed.
