Canon Pixma MX472 print head alignment problem

Everytime I try to run the print head alignment, the paper jams. The paper doesn't jam when I do a copy, although the copy doesn't turn out well because the letters are misaligned. The other functions also run fine without jammming the paper. Any ideas?
