I had this problem when installing a Canon printer, I've seen it on other brands as well! What I found was happening that as I installed the printer Windows goes and finds it's own driver, to overcome this I installed from Hardware Manager using a custom install and searching for the driver from the disc manually.... or turn plug and play off prior to installing.

I would check to see if the printer is Windows 8 compatible, if not see this link Windows 8 Driver

Dave

Hi together, I have a canon S900 printer. Since I tried to use this printer with a Windows 8.1 the printer doesn't work and every system (also Windows 7 and XP) now showd same massege: no comunication with printer.

From Canon I get a very unprofesional answer (we do not suport S900 wioth Windows 8.1). But they still are selling of ink cartridge for S900 with horrendous prices.

=> stop buying any product from Canon because they just steal your money.
