I did find a manual for DPP4 at the web page for my camera in the software section (I had downloaded DPP4 from a Canon web page offering a DPP update), but the manual does not appear to contain anything concerning my problem of .CR2 files being uneditable and I could not find the "Not Editable" icon that adorns the .CR2 files in DPP4 mentioned anywhere in the manual.

Only certain cameras (current full frame and limited number of recent discontinued models) are compatible.

"Digital Photo Professional 4.1.50 supports EOS-1D C, EOS-1D X, EOS-1D Mark IV, EOS 5D Mark III, EOS 6D, EOS 7D Mark II, EOS 70D, EOS 7D, EOS 5D Mark II, EOS Kiss X7i / EOS Rebel T5i / EOS 700D, EOS Kiss X7 / EOS Rebel SL1 / EOS 100D "

IOW, any camera other than a FF camera or a 7D (either variety). It's not clear why the distinction needs to exist; Canon has been vague on that point. The 7D (Mark 1) was a recent addition to the favored few, which lowered my blood presure by a few PSI. Believe me when I tell you that it was damned inconvenient to do a photo shoot using both a 5D3 and a 7D and not be able to use DPP4 to edit the pictures taken with the 7D. And it's still inconvenient not to be able to use DPP4 on pictures taken with my wife's T2i, since we do occasionally go on photo shoots together. (And I also have a 50D that I use occasionally and which doesn't make the cut.) Maybe Canon can be persuaded to see the light, but I suspect that some serious griping may be required.

I see now that John Hoffman reports that they've lowered the bar a bit more than I thought they had, but I still don't see the 50D or the T2i on the approved list.

Thanks folks, yes that was it, wrong camera.

It looks like we all feel that it is nearly criminal for Canon to have two types of .CR2 files, those that work with DPP4 and those that don't.

Thanks to you and jrh75. I downloaded v.3.14.47 and deleted v.4. Don't know what Canon was thinking. I think most folks who buy a new 5D3 or similar camera are upgrading. For a version of DPP to not be backwards compatible is ludicrous!

For a version of DPP to not be backwards compatible is ludicrous!

Well, you can console yourself with the fact that V4 isn't nearly ready for prime time. It's cursed with a variety of annoying bugs and misfeatures and a ridiculously confusing user interface. (I've documented some of the problems in other threads, but I keep finding more.)

OTOH, V4 does have some useful features that are not included in V3 and undoubtedly never will be. So it's hard not to swallow hard and keep using V4, despite its faults, on images taken with the cameras that it supports. But be very careful if you do, because some of the misfeatures are dangerous. There's no "undelete" or deletion warning, for example, and bugs in the image selection mechanism make it especially easy to delete images by mistake.

Thanks for your V4 analysis. Considering the large number of pre-5D3 images I've taken since 2004, when I was using the 10D, and later the 5D, I have no choice but to use V3. It's not perfect, but it gets the job done for me, for now.
