Foolishly updated my MacBook Pro to MacOS High Sierra over the weekend and tried to download some photos off of my Canon 40D via the EOS Utility so I could update my blog, but it doesn't work. Nothing happens. Turned the camera off/on, unplugged the cable/replugged the cable, tried different USB ports, etc. Nothing happened. Is the EOS Utility not compatible with High Sierra? If not, is there a work-around? Will there be a fix? Thanks!

First... update to the latest version of EOS Utility (your version is rather old. EOS Utility 2 is now at version 2.14.31.)

If you go to the Canon website to download it, you'll need to check software for "Sierra" (not "High Sierra" even though they have a High Sierra section. The last time Canon updated those programs, "Sierra" was the latest OS ... so they haven't added them to the "High Sierra" section yet even though they DO work. (I run High Sierra with the latest versions of software and am able to connect to my cameras.)

Next, how are you launching EOS Utility?

When I download EOS Utility for my cameras (5D IV, 5D III & 60Da) I get a directory called "EOS Utility" and inside that directory I find something named "EOS Utility" (which, oddly enough, is really the "EOS Utility Launcher" and not the real EOS Utility. I also get two sub-folders... one named EU2 and another named EU3. Inside those sub-folders are "EOS Utility 2" and "EOS Utility 3".

Make sure you download and install EOS Utility 2 version 2.14.31.

You can get it here: https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/support/details/cameras/support-dslr/eos-40d?tab=drivers#Z7_MQH8HIC0L88RB0AMD0F1Q42K25

(while you're at it... you may as well also grab the latest versions of Canon Digital Photo Professional).

Now directly launch "EOS Utility 2" (do not use the "EOS Utility" launcher). I've noticed the "launcher" doesn't detect my 60Da. It DOES detect my 5D IV if I connect via WiFi. However if I directly launch "EOS Utility 2" then it has no problem detecting and controlling my cameras.

Two more things...

If you use a USB hub... bypass the hub and connect directly to the camera. I've gone through a series of USB hubs and find *most* of the hubs I've used are rubbish. I have a Belkin brand USB hub which always works. I have a Sabrent USB hub which works when first connected... but if the Mac goes to sleep and wakes up, the hub doesn't work (I have to disconnect and re-connect the hub). And I have had other hubs that didn't work at all (now in the trash bin.) I've had other hubs for which *some* devices would show up ... and other devices would not (but those same devices showed up fine if they were directly connected to the computer). USB hub quality is all over the board and I generally don't trust them unless I've thoroughly tested a lot of devices and over long periods of time (only my Belkin brand hub _always_ works no matter what.)

Also make sure you use the proper Canon-supplied cable. (I only make the "cable" warning because with the vast number of cellphones and other devices that use USB cables merely to CHARGE the devices... there are now USB "charging" cables that only bother to connect the pins that deal with power... but do NOT connect the pins that deal with DATA. So you use a cable that fits (has the right connections on both sides) and you get nowhere because the cable doesn't actually wire the DATA pins (so the reason the computer can't see the camera connected is because the camera isn't *really* connected.)

Lastly....

I generally don't connect my cameras to my computer via USB. I have a CF & SD card reader and most of the time that's how I transfer the images. The only time I ever really use the USB cable is when I've doing tethered shooting.

But I have found a couple of uses for a USB connection that Tim didn't mention.

In the last several years before I retired, I did a fair amount of photography for work, so I had to keep changing the copyright notice that appeared in the Exif data. Inserting the notice via EOF Utility was a lot quicker and easier than entering it manually.

And if I'm using more than one camera, or if my wife is shooting too, it's useful to have the cameras' time synchronized to facilitate chronological sorting during post-processing. This too is easy to do with EOS Utility, which lets you synchronize a camera's time with that of the computer.

Hi Tim! Thanks so much for your helpful response. I will update to the latest EOS Utility version as you suggested. I typically launch the utility from the Dock on my MBP, but come to think of it, if memory serves me right, it may automatically launch once the computer detects the camera. As I get older, I feel like such a simpleton when it comes to technology. And yes, I feel like I am drowning in cables sometimes. But I keep this one with my camera and lenses because it's so important. I guess I should look into a card reader, if that's what the preferred mode is these days. I do sometimes wish I lived in earlier times where film was the only option.

Thanks again and I'll let you know how I make out!!

Take care,

Julia

Yay! Bob you came up with the solution. Thank you! It is interesting to see that the card reader, a Lexar, transmits the images as they really are. The Canon USB cable was displaying the pictures with black vertical borders, as if the aspect ratio had been changed. I don't understandf the problem, but you got it fixed.

Thanks again.

Phil Brown

[email address removed per forum guidelines]

Hey!
I've got EOS Utility 3 on my MBP running High Sierra and noticed that I cannot find EOS Utility 3 online anymore, the latest version is now EOS Utility 2.14.31a (which I also have). I'm using a Canon EOS-1D X. I'm trying to use FoCal to calibrate my lenses, however, can only get it work on my old MBP running Sierra, not the new one running High Sierra. EOS Utility doesn't work with High Sierra on my Mac either. Any more suggestions? TIA

Frustrating as you know what. I have successfully downloaded my pictures by using the basic USB Scandisk card plug. No cable, and the downloads work.

Hi Tim -

I did as you suggested, and checked that it is indeed version 2.14.31, but it still doesn't work. It looks as if it's working, lets you set up all the folders and subfolders but when you go to actually download, it only downloads one picture then crashes.

Any ideas?

Mouse

I just bought a new rebel t6i. I have a newer iMac at home with High Sierra. I assumed they would be compatable. If not through wifi then at least if cabled together. No such luck. I downloaded the latest utility software as well. The computer does not evern recognise there is a camera plugged in. The software indicates nothing is connected.

It used to be so easy with my former sony camera. just plug it in and iphotos or photos recognized it immediately. Has anyone solved this yet? Does Canon even care about this?
