How to add vignetting in DPP4?

How do you personally add vignetting to a photograph?

If I understand it, DPP4 doesn't have this feature, or I've missed it somehow.

Steve,

Many 3rd party editors offer the ability to add vignetting or peripheral illumination to photos. I believe Lr and Photoshop do. DxO Filmpak does also. DPP does not as you mentioned.

This morning, I am wondering what would happen if I turned off the peripheral illumination option in the lens correction tab in DPP4.

Nope. Turning off the peripheral illumination didn't do anything more than just brighten or darken the edges a little bit.

I'll have to look elsewhere.

For the peripheral illumination option in DPP to do much, you would need to be using a lens with much vignetting.

The peripheral illumination option in the camera will change metering ( AE ) and with it turned off later in DPP, the entire image might be lighter or darker than expected. I always leave peripheral illumination correction turned off in the camera and if needed for a particular lens turn it on DPP and adjust brightness as necessary.

It seems to me that GIMP is better for special effects than is DPP. If one saves a 16bit TIF file from DPP, then in GIMP one may add a second unsharp mask with a different radius that the one used in DPP and sometimes this will make an image look better. If an image is to be resized for uploading or viewing on a small screen, then an unsharp mask should be done after the resize. Another advantage to the 16bit TIF from DPP is that there is more color information.

GIMP can also do layers and masking. Different unsharp masking might be done in different areas of the image with masking and layers.

I disagree with the GIMP documentation about whether more than one unsharp masking should be done.

You can adjust the darkness and size of a vignette to create the look you want, and soften the vignette for a less dramatic effect.

If you need to do it in DPP, the only way I can see is https://cam.start.canon/en/S002/manual/html/UG-04_EditImage_0040.html#EditImage_0110_1 and selecting the areas to darken would seem tedious to me.

Using GIMP is a major upgrade over a program like MS Painr, or whatever they call it now. GIMP is nearly as complex as Photoshop.

A good intermediate step is another free app PaintDotNet. It’s an open source app. It is only available for Windows, last I checked. Google that name: The app is available on a web site named GetPaintDotNet.

You are most welcome. The app is a good introduction to advanced image editing.

One of the powerful tools to familiarize yourself with is the Layer Tool. If you are familiar with old school overhead projectors and the use of stacks of overlays, then you’ll find the Layer Tool to be very powerful.

I like the resizing and rescaling tools. It really illustrates the meaning of DPI and PPI. ENJOY!
