If you don't mind answering, how did you end up with HIF files? Is that your R8?

I use HIF files (I also have a Dell laptop), but I shoot Raw HDR PQ then convert in post using Canons free Digital Photo Professional 4 (DPP 4). DPP 4 will allow you to view your HIF files and do some minor editing on them, just like lpg files. If you use the Raw HDR PQ files, then editing is more robust. Keep in mind that you must have an HDR monitor to properly view either HIF or the HDR PQ files, which I do.

If you download and install DPP 4, you must install the codec that allows HIF so they can be viewed in DPP 4. Do this by clicking the HELP menu and selecting "Activate HEVC codec (H)".

It's been a while since I did this but, IIRC, you will need to enter your cameras serial number for the download to begin.

DPP 4 will also allow batch processing of your HIF or HDR PQ Raw files. It's slow, but it does a good job and you have full control of your edits. In my screen shot, I do have other files besides HIF, but the program will skip those and only convert the HIF.
