Thanks Marc. I found those the Canon training videos hugely helpful as my introduction to DPP. As I'm not a pro studio I ditched my Adobe subscription and just use DPP and a few other tools. I would bring up DPP with a raw photo on my desktop and try each of the features as they went through the tutorial. I probably should do that exact same thing again as I've likely forgotten a good bit of it as I don't some of the tools very often.

The Canon series is also available on YouTube. If you're looking there, titles are

Digital Photo Professional (DPP4) Features & Availability

Canon offers free software to manage and edit your images. While it may not be as advanced as other application it can assist you in many aspects of post-production that others cannot, they are listed below. That being said, it does give you the same abilities to enhance your images for display at a professional level.

Canon DPP4 is a complete RAW image processing application, if you are not shooting RAW some of the tools will be available to you but your options will be somewhat limited, not as extensive.

These are the core tools available in the DDP4’s tool palettes which comprise both basic and advanced functionality.

Cropping

Lens Correction

Noise reduction

Sharpening

Contrast

White balance

Tone curves

Color

Brightness

Dust deletion

Digital Lens Optimizer

Vibrance and Saturation

The software uses a lot of your computer resources so if you have an older processor and a minimum amount of ram it will not perform like a speed demon. If your machine is older or not built for speed try to limit the applications you have running so that more resources are available to DDP4.

I run an Intel Core Ultra 9 285K (5.6 GHz Turbo) (24-Core), 64GB DDR5 6400MT/s Kingston FURY RGB, Solid State Drives and for video a GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER 12GB (VR Ready) card. DDP4 sings on my setup, processes everything in the blink of an eye.

The software can be found and downloaded from the Canon application portal located here:

Canon EOS / PowerShot / SELPHY Apps & software Scroll down, it's located halfway down the page.

This post is not a tutorial; there would simply be too much to document. You can find many exceptional videos YouTube for both the basics and advanced users by simply searching Digital Photo Professional (DDP4) tutorials. Below is one example.

Since I am a long-time user, I can easily state that DDP4 can perform many of the same tasks as high price paid software applications. After a shoot the first step in my post production workflow is to always review and cull the images that will not make the cut.

Additional information that is advantageous in DDP4, you can review all your exposure data, the body, the lens as well as the focus points for each image you open. When you are learning to use a new piece of equipment this information offers incredible support to the learning process.

Thanks to ebigg1 who inspired me to post this information. He often reminds us and tells new members that this tool is available to everyone free from Canon.

Thanks to March411 for the information about DPP.

Reasons I have for using DPP:

1. DPRAW processing tools (if your camera can save DPRAW files)

2. Digital lens optimizer (when using a Canon lens)

3. As March411 mentioned, using the camera settings as a starting point for editing

4. When one has a newly released camera model, then commercial software will not immediately support it

5. Ability to use the same "Picture Style" file in either DPP or in the camera as a starting point

As for the cost issue, free software such as Rawtherapee, Darktable, Gimp, and gphoto2 work very well

The reasons I use an iMac instead of only using my Debian Linux machine include the ability to run DPP and the nice screen that the iMac has.

Well, thanx to you Marc for posting this. It should be a sticker. It is so important in the image producing process to use a post editor and Canon has created a very capable one for its customers. And the best part it is free for the asking. The vast majority of pro shops use Adobe PS and LR. However, even they sometimes use DPP4 tools to initially process RAW files into TIFF files before moving to Photoshop or Lightroom.

The second part of this post, so plainly reminded above, is to always, always, shoot raw. If you don't use raw you are literally throwing data away that can never be recovered or used in post.
