Yes. I have thought of that, and that's why I was trying to clear the BITS cache. I will try unmapping and then remapping to see if that clears the "hang" sometime. I suspect the "hang" up may be associated with DPP reaching out to the mapped drives. I use mapped drives for several directories and DPP is the only SW ever to have an issue with it. (Well, I had one other app complain, but I ignored the complaint during install and it has been working fine for about 10 years now). I am unlikely to change drive mapping arrangement permanently just to accommodate DPP. I always edit with DPP locally, though, copying folders to the desktop and then saving them off to those directories. Those copied filed DO retain the DPP changes that I save, btw. But something changed along the way as this was always my configuration.

Millions of computers at offices use this very same model, and many use wholly virtual desktops and some have less bandwidth than I do here. The company that I work for has thousands of employees using an thick client virtual desktop model, with many using a VPN to connect from their homes or hotels. I keep all Windows and apps local to their c: directories and not virtual/mapped. What's baffling is that we're not talking about something new for DPP. I've been using it that way for years now, as well, and well aware of how ill-advised it is to actually edit files that aren't local. I have done so successfully in the pat, but there were certainly issues with performance. That's why I went to copying to the desktop. I also used this model to put together an hour long video of my son's wedding, btw. But perhaps I touched something on a NAS I shouldn't have and DPP is stuck trying to read or write some enormous files via BITS. That's why I tried to clear both the BITS cache and do a really purely clean DPP install. DPP is certainly not hindered in performance when disconnected from the network.

The other thing I'll try first is kicking DPP off and letting it sit overnight and see what happens. It could be that I just haven't let it sit long enough for it to complete that action. I DO tend to get impatient when the blue circle goes round and round for 30 minutes 🙂

AMD Ryzen AI 9 XY 370 with Radeon 890M and NVidea RTX 4050. Would like suggestions on how to get Canon support. Please do not bother with the following suggestions as I've tried them all multiple times:

1) Updates - OS, WIFI or graphics Drivers, DPP, Uninstall and removed all of the potentially corrupted config files for a clean install of DPP - done all of that several times

2) Change memory usage for DPP, GPUs, etc. Everything is set for highest performance and background updates of the SW are allowed max bandwidth, etc. Done several memory tweaks to ensure ample memory is available.

3) DID change prefs on DPP to ensure that "last folder" was no longer selected (it was a NAS) and default folders are on the SSD (c: drive).

DPP works fine with WIFI off, spins endlessly as soon as WIFI is turned on on and maxes out the bandwidth looking for....??? DPP won't start (endless spinning) with WIFI on. Stats normally with it off. Seems like a "smoking gun" that some DPP developer or guru might have run upon before. I will try a full removal of files an clean install once again and see if the file locations are still on the NAS - if that's the case I might have missed a preferences file somewhere.

Getting to my wits end and thought someone here might have a clue - just a hobbyist, so not any REAL urgency. Just wish I hadn't updated my DPP to the latest version, and/or performed the system update, and it was working fine before and not now. Updating is not always the right answer it seems!

Not sure what you are trying to do using WiFi, but I will say that if you are trying to load files into DPP using the WIFI connection. DPP tries to scan the entire drive to load all the photo files it can find. Try this you can set the default open directory to a folder on your hard drive and this will stop the in-depth scanning that DPP tries to do. WIFI is not good at this type of connection.

Directions

open the Preferences window by going to Tools > Preferences (Windows) or Digital Photo Professional 4 > Preferences (macOS). In the Preferences window, select the General Settings tab and choose your preferred option for the "Startup folder" setting. You can select "last folder displayed" to open the last used folder, or choose "specified folder" to always open a specific folder you select

I don’t understand what it is that you are trying to do. What camera are you trying to use?

DPP is typically used as a stand alone app. The only time DPP and a camera interact is when the user is using DPP for Remote Shooting camera control.

Most remote shooters use the USB port to connect the camera to a computer. This means the camera must be set to USB communications mode.

If the camera is set to a wireless communication mode, then USB communication is disabled.

As I said above - "3) DID change prefs on DPP to ensure that "last folder" was no longer selected (it was a NAS) and default folders are on the SSD (c: drive)." , so that item was already addressed, and agree that COULD have been an issue. Uninstalled the SW and the prefs files and reinstalled, so there are no files associated with DPP on the NAS.

To be clear, I'm not trying to do anything with the WIFI other than use my computer. DPP is spinning endlessly if the WIFI is turned on. So I have a fix - turn off the WIFI, start DPP, use DPP, close DPP, turn the WIFI back on. It's just that fix seems a bit honerous.

Don't know what I said that involved a camera, but I'm talking about just using DPP standalone, nothing associated with the camera. I just would prefer to be able to have the WIFI on when using DPP instead of having to have it off.

Just curious have you tried opening DPP with a Ethernet connection instead of WIFI to see what happens. It might give us an idea as to what is going on. Does the window turn white and says not responding if so this is a good sign that the program is looking for something it can not find or is a very large download.

If your computer doesn't meet the system requirements, the software may not work as intended. We do not know when any future updates might be made to DPP.

I am running DPP on 2 laptops that are almost the same setup he has and am not having problems. I do think that the problem is in his WIFI connection. That is why I asked him to try an ethernet connection.

He is referring to the system requirements needed to run the software.

They are found here: (scroll down a bit)

Digital Photo Professional

Technically an AMD based system is not supported. Its not stated but Intel is recommended. (For windows)

Since it worked previously, what about trying system restore?

Also, run SFC /scannow from an elevated command prompt.

I have several older installers if you need one. 4.18.x, 4.19.x, 4.20.x.

I just upgraded to 4.20.11, but all of my windows systems are Intel based, no issues.

Have you looked at the System Event Viewer for possible error information?

Ahh. I should have said UPDATED (latest patches) - that's what I meant by "upgraded". It's the OEM Windows 11, just fully updated, as are all of the drivers, etc.

I was poking around looking for 4.18 to see if the pay-for feature AI feature had to be "touched" somehow. Saying Intel is recommended isn't the same as saying it's required, so I would say "technically, an AMD system IS supported" (as it's not NOT supported) 🙂 I mean, really there are a LOT of AMD systems out there and if it's NOT supported shouldn't that be explicit?

Good idea on the event viewer. System errors for ServiceControlManager and DistributedCOM (supposed to be a permission issue?). Lots of warnings in System for DNS Client Events, DistributedCOM and Win32K, and a few Win32k and WinSrvExt. (is DPP 64-bit?) App errors for CerfitifcateServicesClient-CertEnroll (cert authority errors - not sure what is reaching out to a CA) and SideBySide (seems to be a C++ redistributable missing). Hmm. seems I need to research some of this - (which is to say I'm WAY in over my head on the Windows stuff) and see if there aren't some other issues on this system. Thinking I'll just ensure all of the data is off and do a clean restore at this point and see what happens. That won't be soon, most likely as I don't NEED DPP to work, but I DO need th computer to not be running malware or running amok either.
