gar722,

I personally use EOS Utility to handle the download, and then DPP4 to edit the photos.

What kind of files are you trying to download? Are they RAW or jpegs?

If you are shooting RAW, you might try reducing the size of your files by shooting in CRAW, rather than full RAW.

As Rick noted, how much memory is available because newer versions of DPP require a lot?

It sounds like you are probably using EOS utility to transfer images and then DPP tries to open when the transfer is complete but isn't able to because of insufficient resources.

A lot of computers, laptops in particular, are sold without enough available memory to work well with Windows 11 and this is particularly true if you have other programs like a web browser open at the same time. The situation is worse if your video card also tries to use part of the system memory for the video system.

I use a HP Z series workstation to handle DPP and I have been doing some minor edits with it this morning and DPP is currently using just over 6 GB of memory and I have a couple of different browsers running along with a stats analysis program and together the combination along with typical Windows tasks is consuming 22 GB of memory. That isn't a problem with my setup because each processor has 128 GB of memory and the twin Nvidia video cards have 16 GB of dedicated video RAM each.

But a laptop that meets the minimum specs to install Win 11 may not work at all with DPP especially when other tasks are running. Window's built in malware protection consumes a lot of resources and a lot of add on protection programs add to that so you really need a lot of RAM with Microsoft operating systems in recent years.

With your normal programs running (but not trying to run DPP or EOS utility), press the ctrl alt and delete keys simultaneously to launch task manager. It will show you how much of your available memory is currently in use and which programs are taking the most. You MAY be able to shut down some of your other programs (like web browsers or email clients) to gain enough free memory for DPP to work on your system.
