Greetings,

I suggest you get a card reader and copy the .fir file to the root directory on the card. Then put it in the camera and perform the update.

I know many people use the EOS Utility and the Camera Connect App to update their firmware. Although convenient, performing firmware updates in this manner actually introduces another point of failure. It can work 99% of the time, until one time it doesn't.

When you copy the file to the card yourself, there is no uncertainty whether it will work or not.

R5, USA, current firmware is 1.5.0, trying to update to 2.1; Mac OS Sequoia 15.4.1. When using EOS Utility 3 with USB connection, the utility software and camera talk to each other but I get the message "The selected file is not the appropriate updater for this camera. " when trying to update. If I try to update straight from freshly formatted card, I get "Update file cannot be found..." and I have to remove battery to be able to use the camera.

You need to extract or unzip the .dmg or.zip file to get the firmware.

The firmware file is .fir. This is the file that you'll put on the root of your SD card.

How to Download and Install

Download and Installation Instructions Firmware Version 1.0.3 incorporates the following enhancement and fix:

1. Optimizes the timing of the camera's display of its internal camera temperature warning indicator.

2. Fixes an issue that may interfere with the camera’s ability to focus properly when using AF (autofocus) in certain zoom ranges.

If the camera's firmware is Version 1.0.1, please update the firmware with only one memory card inserted into the camera.

If the camera's firmware is already Version 1.0.3, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

Preparations for a firmware update:

After the downloaded compressed file (.dmg file) is extracted, a firmware folder is created.

*Extracting the downloaded file:

The downloaded folder is automatically extracted, and a firmware folder is created. If the download folder cannot be automatically extracted, double-click the folder.

In the folder you downloaded are the firmware (R5210300.FIR / file size: 257,753,120 bytes) and instructions on the firmware update procedures (a PDF file in five languages: Japanese, English, French, Spanish, and Simplified Chinese). Before starting the firmware update operations, please be sure to carefully review the instructions to confirm your understanding of the firmware update procedures.

(The following is the history of past firmware updates.)

Changes in version 1.0.2:

1. Incorporates support for frame rates of 23.98fps/24.00fps when using the LP-E6NH and LP-E6N battery.

2. The Wi-Fi connection status is now identifiable by the color of the [FTP Transfer Icon].

3. Adds [Protect Images] and [Rating] during FTP Transfer.

4. Adds the ability to change [Custom Shooting Mode] while writing images to the media (BUSY).

5. Fixes an issue in which the camera may become inoperable if a lens that does not communicate with the camera is attached when repeatedly shooting while using HDMI output.

6. Fixes an issue in which the camera may become inoperable if an image is cropped while other images are being transferred to an FTP server.

7. Fixes an issue in which Err70 may occur when using an application software such as Camera Connect, and the load on the smartphone increases.

8. Fixes an issue in which image stabilization may become unstable in movie mode when panning diagonally while using some stabilization rigs (such as monopod or handheld rigs).

9. Fixes an issue in which all images may not be copied when copying multiple selected images in the camera.

10. Fixes an issue in which another manufacturer devices (such as strobe or remote camera trigger) may work during pre-continuous shooting.

11. Fixes an issue that may, immediately after shooting, cause the screen to take a long time to turn off when using a button that has been assigned the "Screen off" function.

12. Fixes an issue in which Look File settings may apply to multiple custom picture files.

13. Fixes an issue in which the AF frame movement may not be smooth when several shooting information items are displayed and the multi-controller is operated.

14. Implements a fix to include custom pictures when saving camera settings.

15. Improves operation stability during network communication.

Changes in version 1.0.1:

1. Fixes an issue in which movies captured in RAW/SRAW format may not play back properly on applications due to the attached lens and camera not communicating.

2. Improves the stability of the touch operation control when the [Touch control] is set to [Sensitive].

3. Fixes an issue in which the camera's LCD display may become abnormal after the camera resumes operations from the [Viewfinder off] state.

4. Fixes an issue in which the camera may stop working properly when the shutter button is operated while the BUSY message is being displayed on the screen.

5. Fixes an issue in which Err70 may be displayed when the display mode is switched between the LCD screen and viewfinder while the BUSY message is being displayed on the screen.

6. Fixes an issue, in which the camera's LCD display becomes abnormal after using EOS Utility to capture and import movies.

7. Fixes an issue, in which movies captured using EOS Utility may not be played back on the camera.

8. Optimizes the auto white balance for specific environments when the Custom Picture function is set to [On].

You need to be precise as to which EOS R5 camera you have, the firmware file is different for the two models.

EOS R5 (the original one introduces in 2020) requires EOSR5210.FIR

EOS R5 Mark II (the one introduced in 2024) requires R5210300.FIR

I think you have EOS R5 (the original one) since you mention you currently have 1.5.0 firmware and that doesn't yet exist for the EOS R5 Mark II.

I would recommend using the card to update instead of EOS Utility.

Format the card in the camera using the camera menu

Remove the card from the camera and put it in a card reader connected to your computer

Download the firmware from Canon website, extract the enclosed EOSR5210.FIR file and copy it to the card, do not put it in any sub folder.

Eject the card from the computer, making sure you don't just pull it out as the file might still be being written. Then remove the card from the computer and put it back in the camera.

Remove any lens or other attached accessory like battery grip or Speedlite / mic from the camera.

Switch the camera to one of the creative modes, M/P/Tv/Av/Fv/Bulb then navigate to the setup menu and the firmware version is shown.

Press the SET button and the camera will check the card for the firmware and if it is valid for the camera.

At this point you see a list of the firmware on the card and the camera prompts you if you want to update to the new version. Eg 1.5.0 > 2.1.0. You need to use the camera dials and set button to select the OK button, the touch screen will not work

Firmware update starts, but it might take up to 90 seconds for the progress bar to move, and then takes around 5 minutes to complete the update.

I have been told that it doesn’t matter which Canon site you download from, but I have seen examples in these forums where it made the difference.

One thing that has not been mentioned yet is to have only one card in the camera during updates.
