Hello, Nemo!

I know this is probably no help to you, but just reporting that I'm able to edit both Raw HDR PQ and converted HIF with DPP 4 ver 4.20.10 from both of my R5 and R6 series cameras. I did have to re-install the HEVC Codec for the R5 II. I found the HEVC Codec on the EOS R5 mark II support page and didn't use the "Activate HEVC codec (H)" in DPP 4's help menu. IIRC, it was a different type of install procedure from the first time I installed it from mid 2024 using the Help menu, that is, the last one just installed the codec whereas the first time I installed it, it took me to a website to finish the install. Canon may have just refined it.

I almost never shoot .HIF files. I have yet to really find a use for them when a RAW file does everything and more and seems less problematic.

A while back I did a test shooting HEIF files from my R5 camera. Opening it in DPP4 (v20.10) gives me question marks. I installed the HEVC codec related to the R5 as well. As a further test, I changed one of the files to .HEIF and opened it successfully in something called WidsMob HEIC. I can view the file, but I can't make any adjustments, but it at least renders as a very flat image.

One final note. I shot CR3 files at the same time but put them in a different folder since I wanted to see/work with the .HIF files.

Thoughts?

It works for me. But, only a few things like crop and color levels and saturation may be changed.

To get the most from .HIF images you need a computer with a display capable of displaying HDR content. The .HIF images retain wider dynamic range with deeper blacks and brighter highlights than is possible to be saved in the regular .JPG files, but if the system used to view them is not HDR capable then they can look flat.
