Hi All,

Does anyone know the Canon Connect app GPS update rate? In other words, how often does it update the camera with the location your shooting from? I'm already aware that general GPS receivers update position once/second. I recently did a walking tour in wide open spaces ( so no obstructions), took 14 photos in different locations and the location of all the photographs was exactly the same.

Camera: R5 running firmware version 2.0.0

R5 showed Bluetooth and GPS active

Canon Connect app version 3.2.0.20, build 1391,app shows Status: Sending location info to camera, GPS via mobile: Available, Location information: Can be used

TIA

It is adjustable:

You can set it on some cameras:

I figured it out. The Canon Connect app gets its location from IOS. If the Iphone auto-locks or you manually lock it, IOS stops determining the phone's location and Canon Connect always uses the last location of the phone when the phone locked. To keep IOS updating the phone's location, go to

Settings->Display & Brightness->Auto-Lock and set it to "Never."

After this do *NOT* manually lock the phone. This keeps IOS updating the phone's location which will keep the location that Camera Connect is using current.

I’ve been struggling with this since I received my R6ii around a year ago. iPhone 15 with most recent iOS, camera is on most recent firmware.

Nothing seems to make any difference. The camera seems to poll camera connect for the first image location then doesn’t bother for further images. Phone locked, unlocked makes no difference. Cycling power on the camera or re establishing connection to the app makes it update location but otherwise it doesn’t. I walk around taking images and the location and UTC time are all the same as the first, as far as the camera is concerned everything is fine. I don’t want to be overly dramatic but this feature is next to useless currently. I used to hope app updates or firmware would fix this but it seems not. Canon seems to have no interest in this feature.

I've been complaining about this functionality for ages. Canon need to either fix the application so that every time I push the shutter button the camera gets update GPS data or the should explain why this isn't a good idea. This isn't rocket science.

Agreed. None of the “solutions” in this thread work for me. At least on my iPhone 14 and now 15 with current versions of iOS. Transferring images using Camera Connect is also problematic with frequent hangups and disconnections, although transfer does always work in the end.

The only guaranteed way to update location info for each shot is to power cycle the camera and re-connect to the app. Other than that it’s a case of “do you feel lucky…”

I called the Canon USA support number. The call-taker was unaware of the issue, so they contacted some technical person within Canon. The call-take said that person said something like: We can't fix this issue because the problem might be with the phone going to sleep or ....

I think Canon doesn't have the technical chops to fix this issue.

I’d suggest there are too many phones. All different. I don’t understand why onboard GPS isn’t a standard feature on these sort of £1000+ enthusiast cameras. OK it may reduce battery life but my phone copes with it. Allow the user to turn the location functions on/off. as a phone does. Is it that complicated?

I am having this issue as well with an R5 (firmware v.2.1.0), iPhone 12 Pro (iOS v18.5), and Canon Camera Connect app (version 3.4.1).

None of the suggestions on this thread have worked for me. The Camera Connect app has permission to use Location Services "Always" and is set to "Precise location" and leaving the phone unlocked did not fix the problem.

I did a little digging and determined this was working back in December of 2023. The R5 firmware was 1.9.0 at the time. The version of the Canon Camera Connect app was likely 3.1.1 (based on version history).

Hello Powerkey,

Have you tried to "unpair" the camera from the smartphone's list of paired devices in the bluetooth settings? You may want to start there and then re-pair the devices. You can check the status of smartphone location acquisition using the GPS connection icon on the camera LCD screen. If the icon is grey, then location services are off. Blinking means that location information cannot be acquired. There are a few things that could interfere with the acquisition of that GPS data like the phone's battery level being low or quitting Camera Connect app on the phone, mainly. The other things kind of go without saying like powering the camera off, ending the bluetooth connection, or deactivating location services on the smartphone. Do you get the GPS icon on your camera screen and if so, what does it show?
