Hi.

I didn't do any uninstalls. But some folks report that that works when they have issues. It's a step that never results in problems.

I installed download from the macOS 14 page; the software is not listed on the macOS 15 page. There is some strangeness on the page. The .41 version is listed as a later date than the .5 version (which would normally considered to be newer).

When I download and installed the .5 version the installer reported that EOSU3 was already installed and when I checked it was still the .41 version.

Thanks!

I have heard that it is a best practice when you upgrade apps to make certain that all previous versions are removed. Otherwise, the versions pile up on top of each other until none of them work.

Try using an app uninstaller like CCleaner. I don’t think EOSU2 will work; it installs for me but doesn’t execute. The .41 software is the one to try. Something strange with the .5 software. It has an earlier date than .41 and when I try to install it states already installed (I have the .41 version).

Hi 8thPaladin,

I'm sorry to hear you're continuing to have issues with the EOS Utility. Which version of EOS Utility are you trying to use? If you are trying to use EOS Utility 2 that will not work on current Mac operating systems. EOS Utility 2 is the only version of that program that can recognize your camera. That is a 32 bit program and newer Mac operating systems will not run or allow installation of 32 bit programs. Due to that you will not be able to use the EOS Utility for transferring your photos. At this time there are no plans to update EOS Utility 2 for newer Mac operating systems. You are able to use a piece of software built into your Mac computer called Image Capture to transfer photos.

If you are using EOS Utility 3 it would be good to double check which version you currently have installed. I do not see a listing for the camera body you are using, but you can download the newest version HERE. Once you are on the web page click on the Software & Drivers button. You will see an operating system drop down. Click on that and select macOS Sonoma v14. The current version is EOS Utility 3.18.41 for macOS.

If that is the version you are using we would need some more information for further trouble shooting. What model camera are you using? Are you seeing any error messages when you try to use EOS Utility, and if you do what does it say word for word? What function in EOS Utility is not working for you? How are you connecting the camera to the computer?

Have a 7D Mark II

Using EOS Utility 3 version 3.18.41 (3.18.41.0)

Connect with cable USB 2.0 on the computer side, USB 3.0 Micro-B on the camera side, the cable that came with the camera.

I have uninstalled the utility and used another program to scrub any lingering files off the computer. I used the link provided and changed the 7D mark II software. Installed the 3.18.41 for macOS, connected the USB to the camera, turned it on, and again got the same error.

"Communication with the camera via USB cannot be established. Start EOS Utility after closing all the apps that communicate with the camera, and then turn on the camera again."

I'm unsure what apps it thinks are trying to communicate with the camera, as I only have the EOS open and the browser I am using to write this on the taskbar.

I appreciate your help with this. What do I do next?

Hi 8thPaladin,

It would be good to double check the USB cable. The EOS 7D Mark II has a SuperSpeed USB 3.0 port. A micro-B connection wouldn't be enough for the camera to fully communicate with the camera. The USB cables we sell for the EOS 7D Mark II are the IFC-500 U II and the IFC-150 U II. They are SuperSpeed USB 3.0 to USB Type A cables.

Bought the CANON IFC-500 U II cable, still same problem as before. It is telling me the same error as before: "Communication with the camera via USB cannot be established. Start EOS Utility after closing all the apps that communicate with the camera, and then turn on the camera again."

What now?

What now?

Good morning.

I have MacBook Air M2 running Sequoia 15.4.1.

EOSU3 will work on my computer. I have disabled autostart of the EOSU welcome screen and manually start EOSU3.

Others have identified various background programs that are accessing the USB port and thus trigger the message.

I can't help with that since I don't have a problem.

Try directly starting EOSU3 and see if that works.

I have to manually start EOS 3, and once I turn on the camera, get the error, if I knew what other programs are trying to use it, I could try to turn them off. Just gets frustrating, to have to manually move files from the card to the computer...

If all you want EOSU for is to download images try using Apple Image Capture.
