File names in EOS Utility don't match camera's file names

I need the names of files downloaded by eos utility to be what the camera would have generated.

The camera filename will be used if the camera also writes a photo to the memory card? If you choose to only transfer the image to your computer then it’s not possible to get the same number as the camera would have used.

I use EOS Utility when working in a portrait studio, set the camera to RAW + JPG but only send the JPG to the computer for speed over wifi. This gives me the same file name on camera and computer.

The eos utility download box says setting "do not modify" will use the camera's name for the file, but it does not work for me.

EOS Utility will not use the camera file name when it is set to download only to the computer. I'm assuming in the DPP preferences you have this chosen for the filename.

In the screenshot below you can see that in my case the camera is set to save a both RAW + JPG on the camera card, and also transfer the JPG to the computer. This way will keep the camera filename.

However if you choose to only save the image on the computer, then the filename and number from the camera is not used, since the image is not saved to the card and therefore the camera doesn't have a number to assign.

I mentioned in my earlier post that I use RAW + JPG and only transfer the JPG to the computer as I tend to tether with wifi. In this situation both file types are saved to the card. The camera does save the image to the card, and therefore the camera file number is used when the image is transferred to the computer.

Thank you, sir. That is very helpful. But the transferred image still has a made-up name and i need the camera name. How am I to link the camera name to the made-up name?

I'm just checking the semantics of what you wrote.

On my setup, when I transfer the image to the computer only, and do not save a copy on the camera card I get a filename IMG_0001.JPG

If I choose to write a file to the camera card, and also transfer it to the computer then the file on the computer is IMG_0385.JPG since the camera last captured and saved IMG_0384.JPG to the camera memory card.

Do you want the actual name of the camera in the filename? That is possible too by choosing the camera+number from the dropdown list where you select do not change.

Can you tell me the filename you see on your computer?

I am saving the raw file to the card and transferring that same file to computer. The name of the transferred file is not the camera name but rather the made-up name.

Hello, stargazer!

If all you are interested in is having the camera name in the jpg, change the prefix of the file name in the camera. You will not get the full camera name as EOSU nor the camera naming system work that way. It just isn't possible.

I shoot with many MILC and DSLR cameras during a session and often download to the same dated folder. So that I will know, at a glance, which camera the shot came from, I add a 3 digit prefix to the file name "in camera", like 5D4_, R52_, R62_, R5_, etc.

To the point, I just tested EOSU with the R6 mark II (it was the closest one to me) and configured it to shoot Raw + JPeG and then configured EOSU, as my colleague Brian suggested (Raw on card - jpg to computer), and the jpg files had my prefix attached, in fact, it had the full name of the file and not R62_0001.jpg. See attached.

I hope I understand what you want and that this helps.

Using <Image Number> works for me, at least with the number part of the original filename.

I do not want the jpeg file. I do not ask for jpeg file, I just ask for the raw file to be saved to the card and transferred to computer as that file name. The documentation says it will do that but it does not.

Multiple folks have explained how to do it. Are you following those instructions?

See the following screenshot:

#1 is the setting in EOSU. I have selected RAW and selected downloading to camera and computer.

#2 is what EOSU shows was captured with the camera file name.

#3 is the image (with the same file name) on the desktop of my computer.
