hi im having issues with my EOS R50, im not able to connect to it on my pixel 7 running android 14. bluetooth is fine but when i attempt to connect over wifi to transfer pictures it justs give me connection failed. ive run through all the tips on here to attempt to fix everything short of having to reformat my phone which i feel is a little unnecessary.

ive run on the latest cannon firmware for the camera and the cannon connect app and still unable to wifi connect for any of the features. I've hard wiped any Bluetooth and wifi settings on my phone to see if that would help but to no avail. any help would be greatly appriecated.

I am having the exact same problem. It worked great about two weeks ago and tonight it does not work. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app. Turning the phone off and on. Resetting my camera. Updating the firmware. Removing the Bluetooth and readding. Turned my router off and on. I keep getting the message "Cannot connect to Wi-FI. Please try again later."

Welcome to the forum.

Sorry to hear that you are also having issues with a Google Pixel device. Over the past month there has been an explosion of new forum members looking for help with the Google Pixel smart devices. Apparently, there was an update to the smart device OS, and it disabled or otherwise blocked the Canon app, as well as numerous others. What used to work perfectly, suddenly does not.

Have you checked with Google to see if there are any fixes or updates?

I indeed have their latest update for Google Pixel. You guessed it. December. I just submitted a feedback response to Google. I am happy to work with your developers to see if we can trap the actual error.

There is a new security patch for the Google Pixel scheduled for 1/5/2024. Tomorrow. I am crossing my fingers that will fix the problem.

I was thinking about picking up a cheap tablet until Google and/or Canon gets this fixed. Yes. I am that fond of the Canon App.

I cannot seem to set Wi-Fi parameters on the Camera. It simply utilizes the Phone's Wi-Fi connection. Is this utilizing an ad-hoc (or peer-to-peer) WiFi network?

Would it be advantageous to purchase an external Wi-Fi device for the camera?

U shouldn't have to pickup a new product. Canon should be updating the app to help counter any issues with the app compatibility with phones. Google might have impliment something that broke that functionality but it's canons duty to find away to correct it since going in and fixing it on Google end might break more. If they can't fix the function then put a warning in the app saying there's an issue with the app compatibility with pixels and some functionality might be nonfunctional.

i have reached out to google and they said that since it seems to be an issue with connection between the app and the camera they are unable to provide assistance. while yes it might be an issue with some backend software on the pixel that its the app providers duty to maintain the apps functionality not theirs to make sure things dont break within the apps. so if someone could attempt to provide troubleshooting steps or update the app to fix the broken functionality on the pixel version of the app i would appreciate it.

Greetings,

I'm sorry this continues to be an issue for some. The January security patch has nothing to do with anything wireless. It addresses a local escalation privilege. Of course we all know there are fixes that occur without our knowledge.

I have continued to have zero issues connecting Wi-Fi only and (bluetooth only or both) to the CC App v3.1.10.49_1396 running on my Pixel 6 and 8, Android OS 14 with the December security patch.

I know this is not helpful but I have no way to reproduce the behavior as it works for me every single time I try.

Wi-Fi Only

Select Smart Phone

Pair via Wi-Fi

Camera's SSID and password

Open Wi-Fi on your device and select the camera's SSID broadcast

Enter password

Once the phone connects, this bubble pops up

You can tap it which opens Canon Connect for you or open the app yourself. No problems with Android OS 14, My Pixel 6 or 8 (December Security Patch), or the Canon Connect App. I don't see what Google or Canon is going to do as there is nothing for them to "fix"

I tested Wi-Fi only, Bluetooth only, both at the same time and 2 different phones.

I also connected the phone and camera to my home network and used the Canon Connect App with the camera. (image browsing and control). I am not able to reproduce the issue and have now tested on multiple devices.

Works 100% of the time consistently.

I am suspecting the issues seems to involve connecting to the camera’s hotspot.

Yes something in the pixels canon app or pixel 7 environment is not allowing it to connect. Given the one guys reply say it was working on the 6 and 8 I'm not sure what would be different.

I knew this would be the stance. But we have no way to look into Canon's code to tell Google what they broke. We have a generic error message.

I bought a cheap android tablet and that is how I fixed my problem. It is working on that tablet.

Waddizzle and Zander013,

You are both correct. I don't believe the steps required for association / connection to the camera which is acting as a hotspot or adhoc network is being performed. There are no significant differences connectivity wise between the pixel 6, 7 or 8. The 7 is not unique.

Zander013, can you please post photos similar to mine.

Your camera has the modern Wi-Fi menu. They work the same however.

Canon Knowledge Base - Connecting the EOS R50 to a Smartphone or Tablet

Troubleshooting steps>

Camera Menu

Turn on Wi-Fi [Enable]

Select phone [Smart Phone]

Connect via Wi-Fi - This tells the camera to start broadcasting its SSID name and password

Phone:

Open Settings > Internet > Browse for Wi-Fi networks

The camera's Wi-Fi broadcast should appear - If you don't see it, its not broadcasting, recheck your camera.

Now Select the broadcast, (from list of available networks) just like walking into a friend's house, work or coffeeshop.

Confirm the phone is connected (Wi-Fi network settings on phone) Do not proceed until this is verified

Bubble acknowledging connection should appear, if it doesn't, open the Canon Connect App yourself.

What do you see here? The CC app wants to connect to a broadcasting camera in range.

Please try this and report the results.

Hi I can post pics in the morning when I'm off work. The going direct connect from the wifi works somewhat, it takes awhile to setup and have to setup each time instead of having it connect right away like it should in the app and would be simpler to just plug a usbc into both phone and camera than it is to go through the menu each time to transfer a picture.

I am having the same problem as discussed here. Running the CC app on my pixel 6 pro, it is unable to connect to the Camera's WAP.

Aside from what has already been posted, and the general internet consensus that the CC App needs some work, I'd like to offer that, it would behoove Canon to better explain how the various wireless functionalities should work. It seems like image.canon connects the Camera as regular client to my home WLAN. Seems to work.

But the Canon connect app seems to connect via bluetooth (seems to work), but then also via wi-fi, and both 1) through my WLAN like are regular client, but 2) also sort of like in WiFI-Direct mode, but not really, because the camera is acting like a regular WAP (except sans internet access).

It also doesn't help that the Camera (EOS R7)'s menu doesn't clearly show all the settings. While trying to fight this down, I found my way to a screen that has a list of network connections, but it seems like you can only get to it after a connection attempt fails?

Having had to fight through these type issues on GoPros and DJI drones and the like, it would be useful for some context. Does turning off / disconnecting my house WiFI (i,e: getting the phone and camera off of my network) help? Should I turn off the normally always on VPN on my Pixel? Should I create an VPN exception for the CC app?

I got my R7 a couple of months ago, and it's my first camera with built in wireless, and the functionality is shamefully unstable and less useful than the functionality offered by Eye-Fi cards a decade ago.
