Dear Canon Community --- Please help if you can. I am finding DPP4 to be totally unusable. I am running Windows 10, the latest version, latest updates, with the newest version of DPP4. DPP4 intermittently hangs (the Windows blue circle spinner) for about two minutes. I can trigger it when I click save or try to copy a recipe or try to save recipe to a file. I am observing no other issues with my desktop PC, or with any other applications including Photoshop. I have uninstalled and reinstalled DPP4 and the lens registration application with no observable improvement in this problem. I have tried changing the temporary storage settings with no improvement. Windows event detail follows:

The program Dpp4Main.exe version 4.18.10.0 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Security and Maintenance control panel.
Process ID: 2e48
Start Time: 01daba8b1273fcba
Termination Time: 56
Application Path: C:\Program Files\Canon\Digital Photo Professional 4\Dpp4Main.exe
Report Id: 57099b5b-18ac-433e-a82c-15c08364d654
Faulting package full name:
Faulting package-relative application ID:
Hang type: Unknown

I'm not sure it's a DPP issue.

After the recipe saves does the same thing happen if you try and save a new recipe? I get a slow blue spinner the first save but the second save is very prompt.

I have noticed that sometime within the last six months or so the slow blue spinner has appeared when I select an item in a folder and go to Copy it. After the first time then subsequent sections in the folder are prompt. Same thing if I try to Paste. It seems like Windows may be doing some sort of indexing the first time. It occurs whenever I open a folder even if I had used it earlier in the day.

Seems to have been introduced by a W10 update.

I spent a considerable amount of time on this and through troubleshooting by process of elimination I finally isolated the cause of the hang to a network FTP shortcut on the PC to an FTP server which was currently not available. After deleting the network resource from the Windows Devices and Drives, the hanging completely disappeared. Shame on DPP4! This is the ONLY application I have ever heard of which is vulnerable to such a silly thing. Apparently any time DPP4 looks to the Windows network resources it is not smart enough to ignore an unavailable network storage resource --- or at the very least, quickly time out. Instead it just hangs for about two minutes. I sure hope this discovery will help others. Hello Canon DPP4 developers, please take note.

Do you get any delay now? I do not have any network storage, yet I get the behavior I described with DPP4 and other W10 folders.

Yes but there's no comparison now. After deleting the FTP server shortcut I see the spinner for what I would describe as normally expected amounts of time depending on the amount of data going the local drive or a mapped network drive... Typically for maybe a second or less when saving a recipe to disk, appropriately longer when saving an image file, depending on size. Spinner behavior is similar to what I see with Photoshop, which by the way, has never been affected by the FTP network resource regardless of the state of the FTP server. It might be interesting to see what happens to DPP4 if I down one of my network drives without deleting the shortcut. I may save that experiment for a rainy day 😉 And thanks John, for getting my thinking on the right track by suggesting that a 2 minute long spinner is not a well known DPP4 issue.
