I am new to the R6 MarkII and I am having a very hard time doing the firmware update. The current version on the camera is 1.1.4 and I am trying to install 1.4.0

I followed the update procedure in the dmg file. I dragged the .fir file to my EOS formatted sd card (iMac Sonoma 14.5) but the camera doesn't see the new firmware file. The message I get says "Memory card containing firmware is required to update". I have tried updating through the Canon "CameraConnect" app as well with no joy. I used to feel tech savvy but with this I am lost. Please help?

Greetings,

You are on the right track.

Start by formatting the SD card (in camera)

Use a card reader to copy the .FIR file to the root of your freshly formatted card. (R6214000.FIR)

As Newton stated, install this 1 card only

Put the camera into P mode. Open the LCD on the camera. Use the Main dial to navigate to the firmware update tab. Then use the Quick Control dial to navigate to the update. Do not use the viewfinder. Do not use the touch screen for navigation. Move the focus from Cancel to OK using the Quick Control Dial, Press the Set button to execute. Do not touch any buttons until the update completes.

If you don't have the update option, either the .FIR file is unreadable (corrupt), or is not in the root directory of the card.

Please post your progress. 😃

The only other thing I can think of is that only one FIR is in the root of the card. It should look like this:

So, if you have a previous update on the card, delete it 🙂

Thank you all for your advice. I tried removing the FIR file from the card and adding it back to the sd card and this time it worked flawlessly. Possibly the first one was corrupted. At any rate, THANK YOU !!!

Now installed, may I delete the FIR file from the SD card?

Solved my R6 Mark II firmware update failure — “hidden update flag” fix

I had the same problem on one of my two R6 Mark II bodies: Camera Connect would connect over Wi-Fi, try to push the firmware, then immediately fail (“firmware could not be transferred”). Even the SD-card method saw the file but bounced back to the menu without updating.

What finally fixed it was clearing a stuck internal “update state” (not documented by Canon) by fully resetting the camera. Steps:

Reset the body:

Menu → Wrench (yellow) → Clear all settings (full camera reset)

Also Menu → Wrench → Wireless/communication settings → Reset/clear settings

Power cycle: Turn off, remove the battery for ~10 seconds, reinsert, turn on.

Prepare the card: Format an SD card in this camera. Copy the correct R6 Mark II firmware file (name starts with R62… .FIR) into the root of the card.

Only one card inserted: Use Slot 1 only.

Run the update: Menu → Firmware → Update. Let it complete without touching buttons.

Notes:

Make sure you’re using R6 Mark II firmware (R62*.FIR), not the original R6 (R6*.FIR).

If you prefer Camera Connect pairing afterwards, I’ve had the best results when starting pairing from the camera side with the app closed, scanning the QR code with the phone’s camera, following the installation/open prompt even if the app is already installed, and then choosing “Open in Play Store” (without re-installing, since it’s already installed). This reliably avoids the connection issues I had in the past.

After doing the reset, the SD-card update went through immediately on the “stuck” body. Hopefully this helps someone else avoid the same headache.

The totally non-intuitive explanation is as stated by Rick "do not use the viewfinder". Use the LCD screen. Firnware upgraded successfully to 1.6.0. My only problem now is that it is demanding I set and use a password when I turn it on. I want it operational instantly and not after some Canon nanny chaperone has decided I may or may not use it,

Do I own the camera or does Canon??

Then press the MENU button and navigate to the "wrench" menu page 5. Move down to Manage password and press SET. Then on the page that shows set Pword. request to OFF it will prompt you for the password one more time and then never again.

Thanks everyone, I believe I had already fixed the problem by, after a multitude of combinations (I used to do security, real security that is, for a living once), checking the 'never ask me again" or something to that effect.

It was more a comment than a cry for help -I resent gratuitous foreign government intrusion. The Europe and the EU Brussels bureaucracy has no jurisdiction over me or my Canon R6 MKII or even in North America.

I am obviously naive, but I expect the short firmware description of the problem being addressed to do only the fix and to not slip in totally unrelated surprises.

Thanks again!
