Are you trying to download to a phone, a tablet or a computer, the 400D does not have Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, so you either have to connect it via the correct cable, or do the following to save to a computer:

If it is the latter, then you don't need software, you just need a CF card reader.

1. After turning off the camera, remove the card
2. Insert it into a compatible CF card reader (not a CF-Express one) - likely this will have to be a reader that can plug into you computer via USB. Be careful to line the card up as it is possible to bend the pins in the card reader.
3. The computer should see the card as a conventional removable disc drive and allow you to copy the images to wherever on you machine, using the operating system' file manager.
4. When complete, after confirming the files have copied, use the eject feature to remove the card, plug it back it back into your camera

5. Turn the camera back on. Using the camera's menu system, format the card clean. Do NOT delete the files, this will leave broken clusters in the card and eventually create issues reading the card.

This method is simple, and the fastest, and won't drain your camera's battery.

Download to a laptop, computer, MAC or PC. I thought that would be obvious.

Thank you Trevor. I connect with a cable to my PC and the pics download pretty much automatically. It's only when I tried to download to my MAC that I have run into so many issues and problems.

Please note, there are different ways to get your files onto a computer or phone depending on which operating system you are using. Providing more specific Operating System information for the electronics you are working with will help the Canon Community better help you!

Run image capture directly on the Mac. Sometimes you have to kick it in the pants.

What do you mean by ‘direct download’ ? You may have to set ‘PTP’ on the camera to work.

I would connect to the XTi and the EOS utility would allow me to download off the camera. EOS Utility is no longer on the website. It came with the original disc which I no longer have.

I happened to have access to a CF card reader, but its not my preferred method of downloading off the camera. Professional 4 does not recognize the camera.
