I'm running Digital Photo Professional 4 on a 2018 MacBook Pro with MacOS Sonoma 14.1.2, just going through RAW files on a new WD Elements 5Tb external HD . It's been running fine for weeks and suddenly today it's begun crashing while reviewing photos and any time I try to save or switch between folders on the external HD. I have nothing but a browser open otherwise with just a few tabs and have changed nothing in the last few days before this started happening. I'm unable to do any work on reviewing my photos as it won't stay open for more than a few minutes before crashing again and anything I do can't be saved.

Did you change the DPP startup folder to a location on your new drive containing MANY image files? If you did, change the startup folder to an empty one. See if that helps.
