I've downloaded the firmware but it only shows on my Mac as a .dmg file. When I click on it, it does not open further. Is this whole .dmg file what I drag to my card?

Thanks. I obviously don't want to screw this up!

Sorry.

6D Mark II. I went on firmware site and 1.2.0 is what came up. I assume that is the latest.

A "dmg" is a Disk iMaGe. When you double-click it, it should reveal an item on your desktop within Finder. If not, when in Finder, access the Finder menu, then select Settings (Note: may be Preferences on older operating systems).

When the Finder Settings/Preferences window displays, select the "General" icon, and ensure you have the following items checked:

[X] Hard disks

[X] External disks

[X] CDs, DVDs, and iPods

When you find the item on your desktop, it should contain the instructions along with the firmware file. Typically, you need to copy just the firmware file itself to an SD card. But review the instructions for exact details.

If you've double-clicked on the .dmg and are still not seeing anything, launch the Disk Utility application. I can be found in the Utilities folder within your Applications folder. Or, type in Command-Space and type in Disk Utility followed by Return/Enter to launch it.

In the Disk Utility window, it should list all the disks currently connected to your Mac. You can also use the File menu, then Open Disk Image... option within Disk Utility to open a disk image.

(Not tech support, but I am 100% Apple) - the DMG needs to be on your Mac - either in your Downloads Folder, or on your Desktop - not on the SD card. Double click the DMG file, and it will Mount (it only looks like it flashes - but nothing "happens"). From there - on your DESKTOP, you'll see a drive icon that says "eos6d2 [something" - double click that. You'll see the .FIR file, and a folder with 5 PDF files - one is English (en).

Drag the .FIR file to the ROOT of your SD card (not in any folder - just drop it into the card)

Let me know if you need screenshots! 😊

Do you have any other .dmg files you can try? Perhaps the one you've downloaded is incomplete or has become corrupted. Though that should have generated an error message within Disk Utility.

Thanks for all the responses, but it appears the problem is with Canon. I was able to successfully open other .dmg files from the Canon website, just not the firmware (Yes, I had the right OS selected).

I had Apple tech doing the same thing remotely on his computer and he had exactly the same problem with the firmware file.

Perhaps if Canon is monitoring this thread they can look into it.

I would recommend downloading again. I just downloaded the 1.0.2 DMG and it opened up a-ok on my Mac. Shows up as a volume named "eos6d2-v120-mac".

From Terminal, if executing the md5 command on the eos6d2-v120-mac.dmg file, it displays:

4f38ef57942d3f287c8ab9660f36aced

If you do the same from Terminal and see a different value, then somehow that file is getting mangled along the way to your computer.

Thanks, but I stay out of Terminal and nuclear power plant control rooms. I've downloaded it three times and the Apple tech downloaded it twice. Other .dmg files open, just not this one. Even if I did go into Terminal and find a different value on the file, it does not fix the issue. I hope Canon will monitor this and look into it.

But there wouldn't be anything for Canon to do. By checking the MD5 digest, you'd know for sure if the file was somehow being modified along to the way to your Mac. Not sure what that would be though; perhaps something with your internet provider?

Or, do you have a virus checker that you have installed that is perhaps incorrectly flagging this particular DMG and then modifying it?

If you really want to avoid Terminal, do at least check the file size of the downloaded DMG (Command-I or Get Info from Finder). For my downloaded copy, it shows a size of: 38,020,608 bytes.

It will then be either in Finder - on the left Nav Bar under Locations:

 OR on your Desktop:

Once you've located the icon for the Disk Image, double click it and open it. You'll see the .FIR file, and a folder with PDF instructions:

Simply drag the .FIR file onto your SD card (in a card reader is the easiest way), and you're good to go!

I hope this helps, but if you need one-on-one assistance, don't hesitate to contact phone support at 800-OK-CANON (800-652-2666). They'll be happy to walk you through it!

The file that I and the Apple tech are downloading is:

eos6d2-v120.mac.dmg

Thanks for hanging in on this, but I went through all the virus-blocking culprits. The file size is 38M, as it should be. It doesn't explain how the Apple tech had exactly the same problem on his computer. I have no problems with other .dmg files, including two others on from the Canon site.

The file should be eos6d2-v120-mac.dmg not .mac.dmg. Are you sure you're downloading the file from the Canon USA website: https://www.usa.canon.com/support/p/eos-6d-mark-ii#idReference%3Dsoftware-drivers
