I have a heavy 70-200mm f/2.8 attached to my 6D camera. I want to attach the camera strap in such a way so as to be comfortable, but to take the weight of the lens off of the camera lens mount. Therefore, would it be preferable to attach both ends of the strap to the foot of the lens collar? Or one of the ends to the foot of the lens collar & the other end to the camera body? I would appreciate your thoughts if this is something you have sorted out. Thank you so much.

I'd like to offer these recommendations.

Black Rapids Sports Breathe

Cotton Carrier G3

When I use the sports breathe and a long heavy lens, I fasten the strap to the the lens collar.

When I use a wrist strap, I fasten to the body and use the collar/foot as a handle. The latter does not allow you to use both hands. It just depends on the amount of freedom I'm looking for. Since you are carrying the rig by the lens, there is very little weight on the mount.

Thanks, Rick, for the response. I have a strap that I have been quite pleased with. Ideally, I would like to utilize it with the heavier lens, rather than buying yet another strap. I appreciate your suggestions.

Ricks suggestion of the Black Rapid is the direction I went and attach it to the tripod foot (if your lens has one). It comes with the appropriate fastener. And just to ease any paranoia I use a MoKo Paracord Nylon Braided Camera Hand Grip Strap which you can purchase off of Amazon for $9. It's a lot more comfortable than it looks and I always still have my hand on the grip of the body.

I use the Black Rapid Sport , too. But only when I’m not on the move. I find a camera bouncing off my hip to be uncomfortable, not to mention a little unsafe when I’m walking through wooded areas.

The slings offer no protection against bangs and clangs, nor bad weather. I also use a camera holster. It’s more comfortable, and it provides protection against bangs and rain

March411: Interesting that you mention the MoKo strap. For years I have been using a homemade wrist strap fashioned from a piece of parachute cord. In fact, I used it in lieu of a neck strap when carrying a lighter camera/lens.

Waddizzle,

I use a shoulder holster too. It's made by a company called PRINZ, who I think went out of business.

I like it because it's got a waist band too. It served me well on many a cross country skiing trip back in the day.

Steve,

I use one by Lowepro. It, too, has a waistband, plus a rain cover. That’s not what is pictured here. The one in the picture is by Think Tank.

There is no safe or convenient way to carry a big kens on a neck strap.

Personally I prefer the basic Black Rapid strap for single point contact. I've used it on the lens collar with the exact same 6D & EF 70-200mm f/2.8 combo while shooting sports jobs. Comfortable, and very secure.

But for body only straps with reasonable weight lenses I much prefer the Peak Design Slide strap (worn over the shoulder, not the neck). It's the most comfortable I've ever used.

I use a US-made Op/Tech strap (they also make the CPS strap), and a SmallRig or OpTech wrist strap when on the go "just in case". Then I stow my camera in a CamelBack Cloud Walker 18 (old version - dunno if this would work with the newer one) to hike and take the weight off the camera mount. Of course it also serves for hydration, snacks, phone, etc.

If I were buying now I'd opt for the Black Rapid but the Op/Tech has worked well for me at a much lower price point, although it required some modifications to do so. The modifications is why I'd go for Black Rapid if I had to do it over.

Thank you for the replies. Last week I had the opportunity to spend some time with the lens on the Oregon coast. In the past I used a Lemur sling strap with lighter lenses. The strap is a rather traditional sling type with a "sticky" shoulder pad & loops that allow the camera ot be raised & lowered effortlessly. But rather than considering the recommendations to my original post, I decided to see if the Lemur strap would work with the new lens. And it did. Attaching the strap to both the bottom of the camera body & the lens foot, carrying the camera/lens was both comfortable & kepteverything close to my body. So far, all is good.
