Rick,

Thank you for the kind offer, but I think I'm going to run into the same issue with any kind of screw-on hood. I'll just loosen it up half a turn until the longer petals point north and south.

Thanks too Roger. You guys have been a help.

Tulip lens hood orientation varies depending on what lens it's on

I had a qu3stion about tulip hoods.

On my 18-135 lens, when I mount the hood, it clicks into place, and the longer petals of the tulip point north and south, or straight up and down.

However, when I mount the tulip hood on my 55-250, it screws on, and when it's firmly fastened, the longer petals of the tulip point east and west, or side to side. I could loosen the connection, but I wonder if that will allow to leak in around the sides.

Does it matter if the longer petals point straight up and or side to side?

Should I rotate the longer petals on my 55-250 so that they point to where the sun is in the sky?

Steve,

Odd but if the longer side petals don't block the field in the widest focal length on the 55-250, it should be OK. But I would try it loosened slightly to see if there is really a light leak in the slightly loose position because I suspect the lens mount/filter screw assembly will still be "proud" of the back of the lens hood.

It sounds like Canon intended for there to be some slack so that the hood could be adjusted properly to that screw on lens hood mount.

Steve ,

Although both lenses share 58 mm threads, they use different hoods.

The ET-63 is not a tulip hood. It's a continuous ring. To answer your question specifically, yes the longer petals of a tulip hood should be positioned at the 12 and 6 position.

Pretty sure I have an orphaned ET- 63 that apparently didn't get sold nearly 10 years ago with my 55 250. If you'd like it, let me know.
