Hi folks from the North of England

Serious question about Lens hoods.

How and why are they all different shapes and sizes (see photo)

Camera EOS90D

Lens on 70 -300

On the camera 100mm Macro

3rd along EFS 18-135

4th EFS 10-18 wide angle.

As far as I know these are the correct lens hoods for each lens. Ironically, the one that looks right (wide angle) doesn't work properly because the camera lens shows the hood shape on full zoom.

Secondary question: what happens if i interchange different types e.g. a tulip on my 70-300.

Thanks, as ever

Ramsden

You do not haver the correct lens hood on the EF-S 10-18mm lens.

You can find the correct lens hood for any lens by going to the appropriate support site for the lens and reading the manual.

"... doesn't work properly because the camera lens shows the hood shape on full zoom."

That's why you always need to use the correct hood. Sometimes a hood doesn't help but when it does it is an essential tool.

The ‘why’ has to do with the shape of the sensor and the field of view of the lens. For telephotos, the fov is so narrow a long cylinder does not interfere with the light hitting the sensor. For wide fov’s you must use a ‘tulip’ shaped hood to allow for maximum protection while still not blocking the sensor
