I've gone with a single cable solution for about the same price. As long as the quality's good, that's one less connection to worry about.

My new Macbook only has USB C ports. I have an adapter hub that plugs into one of these and provides a standard USB 3.0 port. This works fine to connect to the Mini B USB port on my 60D but I would like to eliminate the hub and use a Mini B <--> USB C cable directly.

Can I just swap out the hub, or is it doing some sort of conversion that a cable would not be able to do?

Apart from having the correct connectors on each end, does the cable have to respect other specs like "Data only" etc?

Yes. There is no reason not to make a mini-B to USB-C, but it is not a straight cable, it will effectively have the adapter you have built in.

I would be wary of any cheap ones, but if you find one from a reputable manufacturer at a reasonable price - about the cost of the Apple adapter - it may work. Personally, I would just stick with the known quantity of the adapter.

Greetings ,

I found several cables on Amazon that appear to meet these connection requirements. You'll want to use a cable with a high maximum data transfer rate. Power is irrelevant since you can't charge anything with this port. They were very reasonable and not too expensive. This way you'd have a primary and a backup.

The adapter is a hub providing 6 ports that apple no longer includes (HDMI, SD etc.) As such it is cumbersome for a mobile setup. Interesting to learn that the cable has some electronics built in.

Apple makes a much simpler adapter, which is what I use.
