I could be mistaken, but aren't the rails only needed for those macro lenses offering between 2x and 5x magnification along with being manual focus? e.g. MP-E 65mm

Macro focussing rail for EOS 90D: Recommendations and weight concerns

Hi folks

I'm slowly walking into Macro photography and would like some advice before I buy a focussing rail.

I have an EOS90d which weighs 2llb 5oz with 50 mm macro + 23 mm extension. Not too heavy but some reviews caution against excess weight.

Question: I have 2, fourway Macro Focussing rails in my basket.

Both made by NEEWER, one in English pounds is £70- the other £119 with 360° rotatable etc etc. Quite a difference!

Given the weight of my camera, and I'm a relative beginner at Macro - any advise will be most welcome.

I should add that with my biggest lens (70-300) it weighs in at 3llb 6oz.

Thanks as ever

Ramsden

I'm not sure and don't know how to check this. AI said they are for close ups and magnification, so I'll try and get some 1:1 advice in a local camera shop.

I don;t use macro tails. I adjust the focus slighltly between shots so I can capture a stack of images. Doesn’t;t the 90D Focus Bracketing? Focus Brackering can automatically micro adjust the focus for you.

I do use a nodal rail to mount the camera and position it, though. Save your money. Rethink your purchase.

Thanks Wadsizzle

Thats good advise. Yes it does focus bracketing, so I'll do some tests on close ups and see how they come out. The EOS90D does a lot of things that I'm still learning to use properly. But as I said in a recent post when I met a 'semi-pro' at St Pancrass Station - on days out he sticks it on Auto and shoots away!

But my journey into Macro takes time on country walks, so I want to be in control.

Thanks
