topic EOS M5 compatibility with 1.4x or 2x extender in Camera Accessories

I currently own a Canon M5 camera along with an 18-150 mm lens. I would like to know if it is compatible with a 1.4x or 2x extender. Additionally, I have an adapter that allows me to use my EF-S lens from my Canon 1000D with the M5. Thank you for your assistance.

Hi Elizabeth and welcome to the forum!

Unfortunately, extenders are not compatible with EF-M lenses. You might be able to use an extender with your EF-S lenses in the following order: M5 - EF-EFM adapter- extender - EF-S lens. However, not all EF-S lenses are compatible to extenders. That said, the results are unlikely to be satisfactory - that means multiple physical joints that will become potential weak points for dust etc., it will be very long and a lot heavier. Finally, the optical results are not going to be stellar - whatever lens you put on the extender will lose a stop for a 1.4x extender and two stops for the 2x one.

If you want to gain a greater focal range, then I would suggest getting either an EF or EF-S lens that is compatible for the correct focal range to use directly with the EF-EFM adapter without the extender. That will be more secure and optically a better result.

What focal range are you hoping to achieve? We may be able to advise on a lens for you.

Hi Elizabeth,

All Canon EF-S lenses cannot be used with the Canon EF extenders. This is because the extender has a protruding optic element that would fit inside the rear of the lens it is fitted to. The design of Canon EF-S lenses makes use of the short back focal design, and that means the rear element in the lens would prevent the extender from being fitted.

Within the EF lens line-up most of the white lenses can take an extender, and there are a couple of others such as EF 135mm f/2L and EF 200mm f/2.8L that can also take extenders. Extenders do not fit standard zoom or wide-angle lenses.
