I have always kept a 1.4X extender in my bag. Do I use them a lot? No. But they do have a place in my bag. First and foremost, and this just doesn't apply to teleconverters, as your FL increases, shake/movement is exaggerated. I use a very fast shutter to compensate. I have Essential Tremors, which forces me to use high shutter speeds anyway, but when I use the 1.4X, I have to double it. I guess you could say that my "curse" is also a benefit when it comes to getting sharper images with the 1.4X. Typically, I use Tv mode so I can control shutter speed, I then use ISO to get the best balance in exposure. From the EOS 5D mark IV to my current crop of R's, improvements in ISO performance has been very useful for me. I do have a monopod and a tripod with a Wimberly II gimbal, but I've found them to be very limiting. I do much better stalking and being mobile.

Yesterday, prompted by this post, I put the 1.4X on my R5 and RF 100-500 as I was headed out the door to grocery shop. There are three ponds on the way and I planned on visiting them to give the 1.4X a workout. The pickins' were slim, but it was a nice sunny day and I managed a couple hundred shots. I missed a perfect shot of a King Fisher hovering over one of the ponds because I couldn't find it in my EVF in time as it was too close. Pulling FL back was useless with the RF 100-500 because, with an extender, you only have 200mm of usability (300-500).

I ended up with about a 75% keeper rate. Here are just a few samples.

Anhinga at 200 feet, 1/1250th, f/10, ISO 2000, 700mm.

Anhinga.

Double-crested Cormorants, 260 feet, 1/1250th, f/14, ISO 2000, 700mm.Double-crested Cormorants.

For comparison, these Double-crested Cormorants were shot in 2020 with the 5D mark IV using the EF 100-400mm L and EF 1.4X near the same place as above. 280 feet, 1/1000th, f/11, ISO 1000, 560mm.Double-crested Cormorants - 5D4 with EF 1.4X Extender.

Osprey, 200 feet, 1/1250th, f/10, ISO 800, 700mm. You just have to follow a few rules when using the 1.4X.

Newton

What is "horrible" and how are you determining it? Is it a Canon extender? I have quipped before that the two best days in a photographer's life are the day he first gets his extender, and the day he stops using it.

Are you aware that the RF teleconverters can only be used on the RF 100-500mm in the 300mm to 500mm range of the zoom? In other words, perhaps you were trying to use it on the lens with it zoomed to shorter focal lengths?

***********

Alan Myers
San Jose, Calif., USA
"Walk softly and carry a big lens."
GEAR: 5DII, 7DII (x2), 7D(x2), EOS M5, some other cameras, various lenses & accessories
FLICKR

I believe that limitation is a physical issue. The rear lens element moves while zooming and must be at a certain zoom level before there is sufficient space. Similar to the EF 70-300L lens.

Also don't forget to bump up the iso a little bit due to the fact that the tele converter increases the minimum f-stop by one stop I think. So that's going to cut down the amount of light that the sensor can gather at that frame rate. Are you shooting that on manual or on Tv mode?

Were you able to solve the softness problem?

I keep reading everywhere how amazing the RF 1.4x extender is and how it almost doesn't affect IQ. There are several very sharp pictures posted by people using the RF 100-500mm + RF 1.4x, but I just can't make it work.

I had the R5 until 2 week ago, then switched to an R7 because of the cropped sensor (wildlife hobbyist here).
I was never able to get sharp pictures with the extender with neither of the cameras. Without the extender, sharp images, with extender, very soft and/or blurry and/or out of focus images. Always!

Tried almost every focus options on the cameras, with and without stabilizer, with and without a tripod, always the same result.

In the beginning I was almost certain that it was my lack of technique and knowledge of the equipment, after one year I'm starting to think I might have a defective extender.

I’m having this EXACT same issue with my 1.4X and R5. Shooting both manual and Aperture priority. It’s quite ridiculous.

I am having the same issue with the 1.4 extender and the RF 100-500mm. I have tried changing settings thinking that I am making the mistake on my camera settings, but it does not seem to be that. It seems to be a hit and miss for me, especially at maximum zoom of 700mm.. I am into wildlife photography. I find that, the busier the background is, the worse the focus is on the subject. If I shoot a subject that has long grass or bush behind it, it seems to not focus on the subject correctly even though I am using eye detection for animals. I think that the focus is on the eye, but when I review the photos on PC then I can see that it did not focus ont he eye at all. If the background of a bird is the sky, where it is clear, I tend to get a sharp focus. I also find that after having focused on a subject at 700mm and I now want to focus on something closer, i have to manually adjust the focus to get the new subject in focus. Often by this time the subject may have moved or flown off! Very frustrating.

Please can you help me resolve this issue.
