i cannot access the video data from my canon vixia hf m500. is it because it is an HD file?

i have a canon vixia HF M500. I loaded the cds that came in the box, but i have a MAC, and they didnt really take, i think. I do have some canon software on here though, from a canonEOS Rebel t2i that does allow me to access files from that camera, pix and video.

the files from the vixia, however, are no accessible to me.

does the vixia have any MAC compatible software? or is there something i can do somehow to get my files? does the fact that the vixia is videoing in HiDef have anything to do with anything? are those files super large?

also, do movies in HD compress well for YouTube?

AH. am going to switch recording file to mp4, and i hear that should make the file MAC compatible.
