Cannot download mp4 files from Vixia HF R700 to laptop

Perfectly good and working HF R700. Records mp4 files and on play mode can see them/play them/hear them no problem. Trying to connect to a new Dell laptop Latitude 7440 running Win 10 Pro. Connect to USB and put in playback mode > laptop "sees" the camcorder and lists the directories but shows NO files. Tried multiple cables - same problem. When in Canon CameraWindow import images shows 5 "images". Type "Movie" - all on SD card but the import screen shows each item as a large "?". Selecting import gives "failed to import images". Any suggestions??? Tried on an older Toshiba W450 with usb cable and same - no files can be seen! Any help?

Did you follow the installation instructions exactly, on page 159 of the camera manual? Here it is if you don't have it:
